Weird Symptoms?

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum but have been experiencing odd symptoms for the past two years. I had had many food issues in the past which my doctor told me might be a gluten or lactose intolerance. It took a while for me to understand that so I ate less gluten and started taking the lactose pills. I stopped taking the lactose pills in late July because they made me feel sick.I also went to see a gastro who recommended I do blood tests which i am waiting for the results. I'm also scheduled to do an endoscopy in September.

My symptoms are: abdominal pain, heartburn, cramping, bad acid reflux, loose stool (not diarrhea but close) and just a general feeling of nausea after eating. My parents are sick of me complaining of stomach pain but don't think anything is wrong with me and I think there is. Please let me know what this could be and what i can do to prevent it.

Thank you.

First things first, are you still eating gluten?  If you are having testing for Celiac you have to be eating gluten at the time of testing and preferably at least three months before hand.

You could have symptoms of celiac, but they could also be from other things.  I don't know what to tell you on how to prevent it, it's just going to be a waiting game until you get some answers.  If it is celiac, stopping gluten 100% is what is going to help.

I am not sure how old you are, but it is rough when you are sick and no one believes you.  You are talking to hundreds of people that have heard the same things.  You have to listen to your body and if it's telling you something's wrong, figure out what it is. Maybe start a symptom diary, include everything you eat and what symptoms you have and when.  It can help you track if food is your problem.

I hope you get some answers soon and make sure when you get your lab results from your doctor to get a copy and then let us know what they are.  Some on here are better at interpreting the results than most doctors.  Good luck.

I agree. That could celiac disease, and the lactose intolerance can be cased by damaged intestines too. It's smart to get tested. As beth01 said, don't stop eating gluten until tests are done. 1-2 slices of bread, or it's equivalent, per day is enough.

Let us know how your tests go. Some around here can help you interpret your results - be sure to get your own copies. Best wishes and welcome to the board.

Hey everyone.

Thanks for your replies! I had blood tests done and while the gluten one got messed up (was never told by doctor how long or how much to eat) the lactose one indicated a severe lactose intolerance! I will be doing an endoscopy end of September to look for more damage. I've been eating gluten for the past few days and I don't have bad symptoms like I used to. Does that mean I have a problem with gluten still?

Thanks!

Symptoms of celiac disease can wax and wane.  They generally will grow worse with repeated exposures but not always.  If you are eating gluten, get the tests done properly. They might be able to do it when the endoscopy is done.  Ask for ttG IgA and Igg, DGP IgA and IgG, EMA IgA, total serum IgA, and possibly the older AGA IgA and IgG tests.

Good luck.

Thank you! So which should I do first? The endoscopy or the blood test? And if I do one should I do the other? Thank you for your help!

Usually they do the blood work first, if you are positive with that, then they may or may not do the scope.

Yep, as SMRI said, they usually do the blood tests first.  I just mentioned having it done with the endoscopy since you have one scheduled in September already.  If you can get the blood work done soon, and you are eating gluten, then you may as well go for it since waiting for testing is often a hard thing to do!

Good luck.  :)

Hey everyone!

So I got the blood test results back and I tested negative for celiac disease but positive for severe lactose intolerance I've been eating gluten and there doesn't seem to be a problem anymore which is great. Thanks for all your help!

PS is here a way to unsubscribe to this forum seeing as I don't think I'll need it anymore? Thanks!

I'd suggest also looking into fructose malabsorption (intolerance of FODMAPs, which includes lactose) as it can cause the symptoms you have listed above. Good luck!

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
