Does anyone know if Burger Kings's milkshakes are gluten-free?? We usually get them at Mc Donald's but last night tried BK and today my daughter doesn't feel good. What does everyone think??? thanks

I was thinking of the wrong chain, sorry.

I remember that there was a website that compared mcdonalds, wendys, and bk with gluten free listings.....this was months ago. Maybe someone else knows what I am talking about? I don't have time to check their website, but have you tried that? I hope your daughter feels better soon. BTW - I can check for you, but I think DQ offers a lot of gluten-free treats, so that may be a choice for your family in the future.

BK's website. They only mention wheat (not gluten)....

DQ stuff.

I have not eaten at either place since going gluten-free, so I couldn't tell you if they do a good job w/ their contamination control.......maybe someone here can help you out with that.

When I was at BK the last time, I checked out their allergen listings because it was posted on a large poster on the wall. I am 99% sure the milkshakes were gluten-free, but I could have read it wrong.

You may be right, I was thinking of Wendys, sorry.

Sorry to lecture, but if you don't know whether or not something's gluten-free, you absolutely should not let your daughter have it. And you need to teach her that she needs to be sure.

That said, the BK shake was probably gluten-free, but if they list just wheat, there's some chance barley malt could have been in it.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
