Abdominal Pain That Hurts When I Walk?

Hello all.

I've been on the gluten challenge, and reacted very badly, but fortunately (as far as tests/biopsy says) I do not have celiac disease.

Anyway, since being off gluten for about a week, I still have really bad digestion. Typical malabsorption stools etc etc, and now constipated (slow/virtually non-functioning digestive system...). For many years I have had nagging pain in my lower right abdomen which has gotten worse on the gluten challenge, and now it hurts in that area when I walk/move. Would this be constipation or does it sound like some kind of inflammation? I don't see my gastroenterologist again until June.

Thanks for any responses.

Hi !

Does the pain come and go or is it there every day???  Poor you, how horrid !  I'm on week one of adding gluten in again an I feel rubbish - digestive system just not working and I really dont want to resort to tablets.  Has your gastroenterologist any idea what is causing your problems?  I'm partly scared at going through tests etc in case they say everything is fine and I come to a dead end.  My local GP has done a blood test for coeliac which was negative and also wheat which was also negative and isnt interested in testing for anything else and just sends me away with tablets, hence in desperation I'm going private!

It usually comes and goes but at the moment it is there constantly. It's also incredibly tender when I press on that region (around where my right ovary or appendicitis would be). My gastroenterologist thinks it is still a gluten problem.

Sucks about your situation :( I haven't found a GP who really cares about finding answers for me. My specialist is great, hope you find one that helps you out too!

As far as I know, the large descending colon (the one on the way "out") is on the left side.  That's usually where constipation pain is although if you get really backed up, I wouldn't be surprised if it can affect the right side too.

I get ovarian pain for about 6-12 hours when I ovulate.  Could that be it?

Hope it goes away soon!

I had some pain, in the groin area and a bit further up, I think where you are referring to, but  on the left side.  My doctor sent me for an ultrasound scan just to check ovaries etc - all OK.  I mentioned to the doctor who did the scan that the pain seemed worse when I moved.   She thought it might be mechanical.   I am going to put this past my gastroenteroligist next visit, but I have seen a chriopractor in the meantime who says that I have inflammation in my sacroiliac joint (common in celiacs) and the pain can refer to the groin and lower abdomen.  Do you have any pain in that joint, too?  Worth a thought.

I've had a similar pain there - off and on mostly and my doctor said that I probably only produced an egg each month from that ovary.  Whether she's right or wrong I've no idea because she's very happy on dishing out tablets rather than testing and checking stuff :-(  I may be wrong but I do think that doctors in the US are more clued up about coeliac/gluten sensitivity testing.

Hey everyone, thanks for the responses. A doctor thought it might actually be my ovary and sent me for an ultrasound which should that everything looked okay except that I'm close to ovulating. Couldn't see my appendix and obviously could still be colon, but the pain is gone for now!

Ali, sounds like my GPs. I'm in Australia and I can't find one I'm happy with! :( Let's move...

Thanks for your insight. I've been eating wheat bread at least 5 times a week for several months. I've been eating chicken or eggs 5 days a week for at least a year.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Churro! Several things need to be said here: 1. Your physician neglected to order a "total IGA" test to check for IGA deficiency. If a person is IGA deficient, the results of other IGA antibody tests specific to celiac disease will not be valid. A total IGA test should always be ordered when checking for celiac disease with blood IGA antibody test. You should ask your physician to order a total IGA test. 2. Iron deficiency anemia can also give distorted IGA celiac disease blood antibody tests. 3. If you were already on a gluten-free diet or had been restricting gluten consumption for weeks/months prior to the antibody testing blood draw, then the test results would not be valid. Accurate celiac disease blood antibody testing requires you to have been consuming significant amounts of gluten for a significant time period leading up to the blood draw. It takes time for the antibody levels in the blood to build up to detectable levels. 4. Your low iron levels and other symptoms could be due to celiac disease but could also be caused by lots of other medical issues.

Last month I got blood tests done. My iron level was at 205 ug/dL and 141 ug/dL iron binding capacity unsaturated, 346 ug/dl total iron binding capacity, 59 transferrin % saturation. My ferritin level was at 13 so I got tested for celiac disease last week. My tTG-IgA is <.05, DGP IgA is 4.9 and ferritin level is 9. My doctor didn't order other celiac disease tests. In 2021 I was dealing with severe constipation and hemorrhoids. I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I still deal with hemorrhoids but only about once a week. Also, I've been dealing with very pale skin for at least 5 years. Do you think I have celiac disease?

Hi Cristiana! It's so nice to meet you! Thank you for the kind reply I am glad I live in a time where you can connect with others through the Internet. That is a mercy I am grateful for.

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link...
