I have discovered some new gluten-free food items that amazed me.  Ten years into this diet and I am delighted to find new stuff that is world's better than when I was diagnosed.

 

Open Original Shared Link  This website will tell you where these wraps are sold.  They are awesome....soft and you can roll them into sammies that DO NOT CRACK!  They are made in a dedicated facility and all this info is on the site.  Who knew?  :)

 

I do not have a photo of the next item but it is from the Whole Foods Gluten Free Bakehouse.  They have introduced a new line of cakes that are quite simply delicious and oh so like gluten cakes.  There is a Confetti cake, both chocolate and vanilla versions.  Great little cake for kids as they have the sprinkles all over the sides of the cake....very festive.  The cake is moist and delicate but the best part is the frosting. It is not loaded up with sugar so it is very easy on the teeth. Really creamy and yummy buttercream without all that sugar.  I tried the vanilla cake and thought it one of the best gluten-free cakes I have had in 10 years gluten-free.  They are 6" cakes, I believe, and are sold in the frozen section.

 

The crown jewel was discovered a couple of weeks ago and it is the Salted Caramel Cake.  Chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream frosting.  They pipe the frosting on the top in beautiful mounds and sprinkle it with shaved chocolate.  Very nice presentation and great for a surprise cake for that gluten-free person in your life.  The cake/frosting is NOT too sugary either.  Like the other frosting on the Confetti cake, very creamy and doesn't hurt your teeth. It is the perfect balance of sugar to buttercream.  I leave the cake out for about 20 minutes or so for the buttercream to soften up but store it in the fridge.

 

I have bought 2 of the chocolate caramel ones because now my husband is addicted to them.  It is so rare when I make cake because of time constraints and we tried these....home run!  I paid $12.99 for one and we got quite a few nights out of it because we don't eat huge pieces.  That is not bad for great, gluten-free cake....not perfect pricing but we all know gluten-free flours cost way more than the wheat stuff.  I refuse to buy one every week, though and that is gonna be hard...... ;)

Not all Whole Foods are created equally. My Whole Foods generally doesn't carry the great stuff y'all talk about. Somehow, it is thought that we Southerners don't really deserve the good stuff. (That was snarky. Sorry, but the stores I have been to up north have SOOOOO much more  gluten free than mine does.)

I think it is all about supply and demand.  I would guess that maybe there are fewer people diagnosed in the South as this is a common complaint from those on the forum who live there. They tend to think they are one of a few Celiac's in their area. 

 

I do think that Whole Foods will special order something for you from the gluten-free Bakery.  Maybe talk to them about it?  The cakes are kept in the freezer section so maybe order a few at a time and freeze them?  The bakery is in N. Carolina so it can't be that far from where you are located....much closer than I am to it.  I have special ordered other stuff from them so give it a try!

not snarky - TRUE!  when i go up to my sister's in nj, i stock up!!!  tennessee doesn't have half of what i can find up there...........   <_<

:lol:  :lol:  :lol: Good question! As bad as you folks in the South have it, try moving to South Dakota! No Whole Foods. No Costco, And none of most of those other great stores I see mentioned here. The best we've got is Safeway and most of THOSE don't have a gluten-free section either. Here in my town there is a ten foot long "island" in one grocery store with gluten-free stuff (and that is fairly recent), and one health food store with some gluten-free stuff. And if I want to eat in a restaurant I have to drive 50 miles one way. If I want gluten-free cat food I have to drive 65 miles one way.

 

It's a good thing I like it here anyway! :blink:  :lol:

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
