I am not sure if I am posting this in the right area. :rolleyes: Here I go though...

I took my daughter to the dr for her 5yr check today. I also have a 9yr old son. I said that I wanted to test them again for celiacs as it has been 2yrs since they were tested. Much to my surprise... He said, "I am on board with that!". :blink: I was a little startled as that is NOT the normal response from a dr about celiacs!!

He then told me that he was just at a celiac conference!!! He said the dr that did the speaking said that by the end of the seminar he wanted all of the doctors there testing every patient that picked their nose!!! :unsure: My dr said that he only tested those that had "classic" symptoms or those that have diabetes. He drew an iceberg with the very tip being "classic celiacs". I was SO excited when I left!! :D

He is going home tonight to review the notes he took. He is then going to do the HLA test on my kids to see if they even have the genes to be concerned with. We are also going to do the IGA since they are drawing blood. The kids aren't too happy about that but life is filled with unpleasureable things that we HAVE to do!! :D

So... I am SO excited that the word is out there! I sure do hope that more doctors learn about celiacs and that it is not all about GI problems!! OOHHH... He also said that 1 in 4K short stature kids test positive for thyroid. The numbers are 10 in 100 test positive for celiacs!!! THAT IS HUGE!!!!

I just wanted to share my excitement! My kids have not tested positive. I have. I am hoping that they can lead a normal life but if not, I'd rather it be this then diabetes!! ;)

do you think you could give me this doctors contact info so that i can contact him. i am doing a research paper on celiac and i have to have aleast one contact so it would be nice to some how get a hlod of him or the doctor who did the confrence or even both.

I will be seeing him tomorrow. I will ask if that is okay. Or I will ask him who did the speaking. I don't just want to give the info out without permission. I will either pm you tomorrow or pm me in case I forget. Our appt is at 10:30cst. I am VERY forgetful! I like to blame celiacs for that, I just don't know if that is the right thing to blame!! :rolleyes:

The conferences must really be going around because when I was at my GP a couple of weeks ago, she had one of those dr.'s who are interning and shadowing her to learn. He came in before my GP did and introduced himself and started asking questions. As soon as I heard he was learning to be a dr., I made sure I started talking about celiac disease non-stop and rhyming off numbers of people effected, etc. etc. By the time my doctor came in, I had talked the poor guy's ear off about celiac disease. My dr. chuckled when I told her I was drilling celiac disease into this guy's brain and she said she had just returned from a celiac conference and started telling this guy all about it. It was really cool!

I can tell you one thing, this guy will be testing everyone who walks through his door when he becomes a doctor!!!!

What great news! I hope more and more doctors become informed, what a blessing that would be.

I was also recently surprised by my ped.....I made an appt. to have my other child tested, and he was also completely on board with it. I was all ready to defend my reasons for requesting the test, but he readily agreed, w/out a fight! I think he too is pretty up to date on the current celiac info, which is a refreshing change.

      Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

      This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
