Newly Diagnosed Apprentice

Is it necessary to use gluten-free shampoo, hand lotion, etc?  I got rid of all of my lipstick and chapstick and went gluten free on lip products when I was diagnosed in December, but now I am thinking that maybe I should also think about replacing some of my other products, like shampoo and hand lotion, maybe face lotion and other makeup.  I don't eat my shampoo or hand lotion in the same way I may accidentally ingest lip care products, but the more I think about it the more I think maybe I would be better off going gluten free on these also.  What are your opinions on this?

First, there is very little or no gluten in most products.  They usually are happy to proclaim "wheat germ oil" or something like that.  I try to avoid those obvious ingredients because I tend to get shampoo in my mouth, slop my face lotion around, etc.

Gluten is only dangerous to a Celiac when ingested.  So I guess you could roll in it as long as you don't swallow any!  lol

"Gluten must be ingested to be cause for concern for someone with celiac disease. We still recommend those with celiac disease avoid contact with gluten, especially with products that have the potential to be ingested. Small amounts of gluten can be found in many cosmetics, lotions and shampoos. Avoid product ingredients that literally say “wheat,” “rye,” “malt” or “barley.” July, 2012"

"Gluten is only toxic to celiac patients and patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) if ingested. Because gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin, the use of cosmetic and shampoos containing gluten has not been shown to be detrimental to patients with celiac disease or DH. My long hair gets in my mouth frequently so I use gluten free hair products.

      It’s actually very common for doctors to order both an endoscopy with biopsies and additional imaging like a CT scan with contrast, depending on your symptoms. The endoscopy with biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing celiac disease because it allows doctors to directly examine the small intestine and check for villous atrophy. A CT scan, however, doesn’t diagnose celiac disease but can help rule out other causes of abdominal pain, weight loss, anemia, or inflammation. Your doctor may be looking for complications, structural issues, or conditions that can mimic celiac symptoms. So while the CT isn’t part of routine celiac testing for everyone, it is normal if your doctor wants a more complete picture of what’s going on.

      Say what you will about Peter Osborne, but he gave me back my life.  Back in 2007 he was not promoting grain free, but came to that conclusion a few years later.  While I did OK on gluten free, I really saw the greatest recovery when I went grain free.  I notice a huge difference if I eat a gluten free food that contains any sort of grain. I ache all over, have digestive issues and my rash comes roaring back.  I think it is probably, because grains are sprayed with Glyphosate in the drying process before being shipped.  Thanks, but I will stick to my organic, grain free diet and continue to feel well at 73.  Not missing out on nutrients as I follow a strict supplement plan based on testing.

      Hello, My 17 yr old daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease 2 yrs ago. She does not have gum disease and no history of cavities. Her dentist is recommending braces for her lower teeth but I read it may worsen gum recession or possibly increase cavity risk which I know are already issues for patients with celiac. Has anyone here had braces and did it cause any problems or issues with gum recession?  Her dentist seemed oblivious that celiac patients are at higher risk of gum disease /cavities. Her bottom teeth are crooked but are pretty hidden even when she smiles. Thank you!!

      This is a common experience across the board with various brands of gluten-free bread products. Prices go up, size goes down. Removal of the egg component may be for the purpose of cost-cutting related to bird flu supply shortages or it may be catering to those with egg allergy/sensitivity, fairly common in the celiac community.
