My daughter brought me a Knickinick bread tonight - gluten free, yeast free. I have never tasted a yeast free bread that was worth the price of the wrapper. This one is quite good - actually tastes like bread. It is not too heavy either as so many of the gluten-free products are. I ate it with just a little margerine (soy). I will try toast in the morning, Imagine - me having toast for breakfast! Claire

Kinnikinnick success story! i found their sandwich bread at this one store in town. i'd been hauling pizza crusts home from an hour and a half away because i couldn't find them anywhere else. so i asked them if they would start to carry the pizza crusts. well, ladies and gentlemen, no more than 3 months later, we have pizza crusts, 3 flavors of donuts, white bread, brown bread, sunflower flax bread, multigrain rice bread, hamburger buns (which make a fine chili dog! although a little on the sweet side), tapioca rice bagels, new york rice bagels, choc chip muffins, blueberry muffins, and cinnamon rolls.

dang it, now i'm hungry again! :P

as far as product reviews, all their bread stuff tends to be a tad sweet for me, but i'm a huge fan of the donuts and the cinnamon rolls. and you can't beat arriving home tired and hungry and popping a pizza in the oven.

I think Kinnikinnick is hands down the best at EVERYTHING...sigh...they just make me smile!

I agree. Kinnickinnick by far is way ahead of other makers of gluten-free breads, muffins, etc. Their english muffins in particular are so nice a fluffy I can't believe that they are gluten free! They rock!

I guess that's what I get for posting so late!!! (reminds me of our "You know your a Celiac when" list: remember the "You can say Kinnikinnick 10 times quickly without messing up"? (something like that!) :P

Wish I could go to sleep but my tummy just won't let me, it is fully active tonight, wearing out the carpet from the computer to the loo!

Not to get off the subject, but what's the origin of the word "loo." I know what room it refers to. Is Loo short for something else? Since it's British in origin it's not used much in states, if at all, and I was just wondering about how it got it's name.

P.S. My stuff on postcards went out to you this week.

Hi, my name is Nancy, and I'm an information junkie (and and insomniac). So yea... I looked the origin of the word Loo up for you. :lol: Looks like there are a few interesting theories. The most popular, it seems, is that it came down over the years from a French phrase - gardez l'eau - which means "watch out for the water"

I was in Italy last year (before I was diagnosed). The public toilets are actually holes in the ground that you have to "squat over". Maybe "loo" is the Brittish pronunciation of "low".

Their products are wonderful!! I wanted the whole foods near me to carry them so I emailed the conact for the Mpls store and she said she has been working on it. And she wanted to know what products I wanted in the store! So, if your store does not carry them ask and you should get them!!!

lol! that is how i learned to spell it too. it took me forever to find the page!

as for favorite Kinnikinnick bread, i think i'd go with the italian white bread. i can't remember the exact wording but there's italian in there somewhere. not really sure why, though, now that i think about it. :) yesterday i saw some more exotic ones but i haven't tried them yet.

Well so far I like their Pizza crusts, their white sandwich bread, chocolate donuts and their montanas chocolate chip cookie..

ALSO Mightymorg where do you find them in Austin?? I have only seen them at the Herberry...any other place you know of?

I noticed that I spelled it wrong! I guess everyone here would know what I meant. Spelling is one thing - pronunication is another. I haven't heard two people say it the same way. I imagine it is an Indian word,

We have one local store selling some of their products and our newest store 'The Natural Marketplace' is going to be adding it soon.

As I can't handle yeast, a lot of their products are not for me. Finding a yeast free bread that looks and tastes and has the texture of bread is indeed a real find. It doesn't have a lot of flavor but spreads and fillings can take care of that. It is the texture of bread that I have missed - for 15 years now - so this a treat. Claire

I just made some chicken nugets with thier "breading" that I got at Whole Foods. Pretty good!! Made a pound and theres a ton of "breading" left :) gluten-free and EF even!

breading! score! i have been craving some chicken fingers lately; i'll have to see if i can get my hands on some of that. i don't think i've seen it around here, though -- in my 4 stores that i go to :P . (i'm finally starting to be able to keep straight which one is the frozen food store, which one has all the flours, which one has the cheapest cereal, and which one carries kinnikinnick!)

It is called "Crispy Chicken Coating" or somthing like that. You can order from thier site if your store does not have it, Just need make the order bigenough to make up for shipping.

has anyone tried any of their breads that have fiber in them- like the brown sandwich bread or multigrain rice bread (or any others) i am looking for a bread or muffin that is edible and has some fiber in it, and most of the gluten-free breads i have seen have < 1 gram! also, if anyone knows any stores in nyc that sells their stuff, do share! (trying to avoid ordering online...) Thanks!

      Thank you for the clarification and for taking the time to explain the terminology so clearly. I really appreciate your insight, especially the distinction between celiac disease and NCGS and how anemia can point more toward celiac. This was very helpful for me.

      Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

      My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
