It's Fructan, Not Gluten, That's Causing Stomach Problems, Says New ... who are on a gluten-free diet were found to have an increased risk of developing ... have looked at here is gluten sensitivity that's not related to celiac disease.

So can one have both stomach issues from fructan and other issues from gluten?

why do NCGS have joint, muscle, mood, skin, neuropathy to gluten?

imho I don't think you can put it in a nice box

NCGS is just bloating from fructan .....

I would be interested to see how they explain all the non bloat celiac immune like symptoms beyond bloat

There is nothing in this that looks at extra intestinal symptoms. And frankly, when I’m glutened, I suffer the consequences for weeks. AND I’m more sensitive to lots of foods.  AND I did my gluten challenge with vital wheat gluten because I knew the GI doc was going to try to pin it on the FODMAPS.  What about folks like us??

Since there is no test to actually confirm NCGS and tease out other intolerances or conditions that are alleviated with the removal of grains, these studies are useless. But the media (and my daughter’s GI doc) love to toss the blame there without looking further.

Then there’s the fact that any food intolerance contributes to gut dysbiosis, which in turn is a trigger for intestinal permeability and immune system response.  Even those with NCGS have a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases (can’t remember the exact study).

I'm glad that research is being carried out but looking at GI symptoms only is not enough..

'We performed a double-blind crossover challenge of 59 individuals on a self-instituted gluten-free diet, for whom celiac disease had been excluded. The study was performed at Oslo University Hospital in Norway from October 2014 through May 2016. Participants were randomly assigned to groups placed on diets containing gluten (5.7 g), fructans (2.1 g), or placebo, concealed in muesli bars, for 7 days. Following a minimum 7-day washout period (until the symptoms induced by the previous challenge were resolved), participants crossed over into a different group, until they completed all 3 challenges (gluten, fructan, and placebo). Symptoms were measured by gastrointestinal symptom rating scale irritable bowel syndrome (GSRS-IBS) version. A linear mixed model for analysis was used.'

That was an excellent idea. I see more on fructan and Fodmaps and it was mentioned to me prior to my challenge . I could not finish my challenge and could eat fructan/Fodmaps foods before the challenge.  I did get a whole mess of problems and intolerance s after.err r . They still linger on.

I often wonder if fructan is the new sought after (du jour)  research topic. I just think ummm I think you left out some others ....

NCGS May not be  easy to study and they decide to throw that baby out with the bath water .... and let's study fructan instead.

Edit auto correct keeps changing fructan

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
