Does anyone know anything about the correlation between celiac desiease and depression?

Im in a huge depression at the moment and haven't felt this bad in all my life, it's unbearable. My mom is convinced it has with my celiac to do, does anyone know how they affect eachother? Thanks for all the help and advice, i desperately need it.

There is some correlation between people who have Celiac and are not gluten-free and metal health issues.  I am assuming you are gluten-free.    It is also possible to be depressed or have mental health issues that have nothing to do with Celiac.  Either way, if you are very depressed, please get help immediately.  I think it is great that you are telling your mom about it.

One of my first symptoms when I get glutened is an overwhelming depression.  Thankfully it lifts pretty quick as long as I am not being reglutened.

Are you gluten free and may have gotten glutened?  How long have you been gluten free? Do read the Newbie 101 thread at the top of the Coping section to make sure that you are doing all you need to do to be safe.

How long have you been this depressed? If it has gone on for more than a couple days you should touch base with your doctor. If you feel you might self harm please tell your Mom and either call your doctor or go to the ER.

Welcome to the board. Ask any other questions you need to ask and feel free to vent. The gluten free lifestyle takes some getting used to and it can be hard for while. We are here to help in any way we can. Hang in there. Things will get better.

Many times it can be related to a nutrient deficiency from your damaged intestines, like B-vitamins, and a few others, I would need to check my charts. I honestly eat a ton of pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, and cocoa nibs to promote my body to produce feel good chemicals all the time. I also take liquid b-vitamin complexes to deal with it like Liquid Health Stress & Energy. But yeah it sort of sucks....yesterday I got hit bad by things stacking in life......I dealt with it by working out til the endorphins kicked in then tried distracting myself with games and anime.

Might do what I do, start a blog somewhere and just vent. Or vent to someone you know....doing so makes you feel so much better.

Ennis_tx has given you good advice  try a  B-complex and Magnesium Glycnate.

Magnesium and B-Vitamins are best taken with each meal for the first few months then you can scale it/them back to 2/day for the next few months and see if you now need less of them to maintain your newfound good moods.

Here is the link between depression in Celiac's.   It runs' around 40% of  most Celiac's have depression (if I remember correctly)  but often just going gluten free helps most celiac's.   I know it was a serious problem for me.

But I highly recommend a B-complex and Magnesium to help in the meantime till your villi have completely healed and you begin to again absorb these nutrients on your own.

**** this is not medical advise just things I did that I found helped me with my lifelong depression.

You might also have your Vitamin D levels checked it has been connected to Seasonal Affective Disorder(s) aka (SAD) especially in the winter commonly known as the winter blues.

My mood improved drastically after my work location changed to be near a window. . . by then I knew to take Vitamin D to help this condition (SAD) but still my moods improved when I had real sunshine to see everyday and shine on me.

My friend was moved to an outer "cube" because her doctor wrote a prescription for her SAD condition.  . . and it did help and with her official diagnosis she was able to buy a "light box" to simulate real sunshine on the days when the sun wasn't shinning through the clouds.

***again this is not medical advice just things  I have done that helped my depression.

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.
