Opinions/reassurance Am I going mad?

Hi. I’m new to the site and what a wonderful resource it is. I’m hoping those in the know would be able to share their opinion of my situation.

For as long as I can remember I’ve had bowel issues swinging from constipation to diarrhoea. Anyway I’ve had a big change in symptoms over last 2 months (lots of stomach pain, bloating, stick to the side of the pan pops sorry for the tmi) so much so that my GP suggested coeliac and I agreed to a blood test. Bloods were taken last Monday, results could be up to 3/4 weeks. At the same time they took bloods to run for all sorts and they showed increased CRP and ESR therefore inflammation. Was advised to repeat those bloods in 2 weeks, 1 week to go but I’d already started going gluten free in meantime as GP said blood test would be sufficient for diagnosis.

I think I was doing ok with it and generally felt better but then wham I woke at 5am this morning with a stabbing pain in my stomach, looser poo and then threw up bile. Phoned out of hours as I had my appendix removed in January and was worried it was related. They sent me to A&E. They repeated bloods and CRP had dropped from 33 to 27, which he attributed to going gluten free and ER doc suggested I’d unintentionally had gluten. Then I realised I had taken communion at church yesterday without even thinking. Is it possible to have such a reaction after being off gluten for 1 week? Or has the ER doctor just jumped on the bandwagon that my GP suggested? They sent me off with cocodamol and advice that I’ll just need to ride it out.

The only other thing noted in bloods was very low folate. So really what am asking do you fine folk think this sounds like ceoliac? I’m very anxious about the whole thing.

Many thanks

Welcome!

There are over 200 symptoms that can be attributed to celiac disease.  Unfortunately, they often overlap with other illnesses.

Here is more information about testing, which usually includes taking biopsies from the small intestine.

Hi.

Just a quick update in case anyone comess across this on a google search or whatever. I hated seeing the start of things like this and never knowing how it resolved.

Turns out I don’t have celiac disease and that all the pain and issues I was having was from an incomplete appendectomy. Surgeons had to fix that and due to the damage I lost part of my bowel.

So my advice would be make sure your doctor rules everything out and if something doesn’t feel right to you be persistent.

Thanks for letting us know!  Never rule out celiac disease for life though.  It can develop at anytime.   Triggers are thought to be a virus, infection, or stress (e.g. surgery).  So keep that in mind if you get sick in the future.

I am glad you are well!

@cristiana Yes - just to add to this: my ferritin went down after my first 2 infusions (which were 8 months ago), so I got more infusions a couple of weeks ago. From those alone, I'm feeling better. It's a work in progress! Be patient! I was also taking iron supplements the entire time.

@OlafAndvarafors  I just wanted to reassure you that I had these same issues for a while before and after diagnosis but they did settle.  I think the deficiencies and anxiety that are very common in undiagnosed/newly diagnosed coeliacs are a perfect mix for twitching!  I cannot say exactly how long you will experience this but my feeling that once you are properly diagnosed and it is found to be that gluten is an issue, get your vitamin/mineral levels assessed and if they are low/low normal, don't hesitate to supplement until the levels normalise.   I was Iron anaemic, and low normal with B12.   Once my levels of iron were normal, and B12 nearer 500, my symptoms reduced greatly, and I found magnesium helped A LOT with twitching face muscles in particular.  However - word of caution with iron: if you do need to supplement, have regular blood tests to check levels as too much iron can be dangerous.

a deficiency in thiamine (vitamin B1) can contribute to muscle twitching, especially in more severe cases of thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is crucial for nerve function and energy production, and its deficiency can disrupt muscle contraction and nerve signals.  Lots of Thiamine a day, several hundred mg, to reverse thiamine deficiency.  The usual dose for adults is between 25mg and 100mg, taken once a day. Severe thiamine deficiency The usual dose for adults is 100mg, taken 2 or 3 times a day.

Hi @Mettedkny I’ve had the same problem with Xiromed Progesterone 100 Caps. I’m very careful about gluten and only have had gluten “gut issues” since starting these. I previously had another brand, and no problems. So, even if Xiromed says “gluten free” perhaps in the manufacturing process there is gluten cross-contamination. I’m already requesting a different manufacturer to see if there is improvement.

I thought I'd share this article about recent findings that not enough gluten is transmitted during kissing to be concerned about: https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1082120  What do you think?
