Mono Diagnosis and Microabscess on Tonsils

So my December hasn't been quite as I had planned ?  Got diagnosed with mono at the beginning of the month, and then had my airway almost swell shut after developing a secondary super bacterial infection and microabscess on my tonsils.  Ended up staying in the hospital for three days for that and because my heart rate was elevated.  Luckily the hospital had decent gluten free food.  Shoutout to Pennsylvania Hospital for that!

Anyway since with celiac our immune systems are already having a rough time, I'm wondering if anyone has had mono post celiac diagnosis, and if you found anything that really helped you recover faster.  I'm such an on the go person, and mono has knocked my feet out from under me this month.  I am resting and laying around, drinking lots of water but was hoping my fellow GFers had some suggestions.  For reference, I am a 32 year old female.  PS-thankfully my doctor isn't one who tells people you can't have mono past the age of 25.  I was initially misdiagnosed with a sinus infection at an urgent care, and antibiotics were doing nothing.  I went to my primary care doctor, and she ran the mono blood test that showed I am currently in the acute phase of the infection.  Also if this helps anyone, strep throat and mono throat look the same.  I had white patches allllllll over my throat but had two negative strep tests.  So really it was mono throat the whole time, and let me tell you...worst sore throat of my life!  The positive is I had made it to age 32 without ever being admitted to the hospital, so I'll take that as a win!  Please send any and all suggestions my way.  Thanks!

I am so sorry to hear about your Mono.  From what I understand, it takes time to heal even if you do not have celiac disease or other illnesses.

Just like healing from celiac disease or mending bones from a fracture, you just have to be patient.  Take advantage of it.  When I fractured my back (osteoporosis from celiac disease), I chose to milk it for once in my life.  No bed making for me.  No chores.  Lots of resting, binge watching TV, reading and learning to appreciate being bored.  Soon my back healed. It took time though.  If I recall, it took a year before I was back on my bike willing to risk other fractures.

I could use a rest like this now!

Hang in there!  Hugs!

I had mono in my mid-thirties, pre-celiac diagnosis. My main symptom was extreme tiredness (well, that and a very swollen lymph node in my armpit).  I was out of work for a month.  If you’ve only had it since the beginning of the month you probably just need more time to heal.  You will get over it!

PowerofPositiveThinking,

Here is a thread that might help you.

https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/122593-tonsillectomy/?tab=comments#comment-997652

Often taking the amino acid lysine will help mouth sores and swilling with salt water also can help if you can bear it.  Don't swallow the salt water only swill it and spit it back out after 30 seconds or so.

Most Tonsils issues are probably not bacterial in nature but viral.. .. and explains why the antibiotics didn't help you.

Here is the research on it

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19488557

also see this new research just this week about how CFS are now thought to be linked to viruses and an overactive/hyper active immune system.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-may-be-due-to-an-overactive-immune-system-study-shows/ar-BBR5ba3

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice.

“Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included.

2 Timothy 2:7

Good luck on your continued journey.

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
