Bechet's Disease

I have a friend who was tentatively diagnosed with Bechet's disease--another autoimmune. Just wondering if anyone here has any info or experience with it...I'm trying to do some research for her.

i wounldn't use google i would use metacrawler.com. metacrawler searches the search engienes and so you get more from your search. like it searchs google and yahoo and jeeves and a few others i can not remeber right now. but i love i use it for all my research papers and things.

I just looked it up on Yahoo. It's actually called Behcet's disease and was first discovered about 200 years ago in Turkey. Nobody really knew about it then of course. The name "Behcet's disease" it actually got (if I can recall it right) 1932, when they found out that some of the main symptoms were mouth and genital ulcers. Very interesting...

Hey, I just found this:

"Behçet's disease was first described in 1937 by Dr. Hulusi Behçet, a dermatologist in Turkey."

So it wasn't 1932, it was 1937...

Here are the symptoms: Most symptoms of the disease are caused by inflammation of the blood vessels. The five most common symptoms of Behçet's disease are mouth sores, genital sores, other skin lesions, inflammation of parts of the eye, and arthritis.

Thnx guys...I have done some internet research, just didn't know if anyone here had it or knew someone who did. She is pretty miserable to say the least..and has some crohn's type symptoms...just trying to research and see where all these things might intersect....

Gee, I had never heard of it and it sounds awful. Hope your friend has a Dr. that is up on the latest info. about it and that she doing better soon.

I do know someone with it but I'm not close enough to ask about it. What I have seen of it so far is not very good. I hope your friend doesn't get the more severe symptoms. Another woman I know was tested for it but they ruled it out. She is also a diabetic (type 1) and has a son with Aspergers.

I was diagnosed with Behcet's Disease in 2001. I was also diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2003 and autoimmune hepatitis last November. I have Remicade IV treatments every 6 weeks...it helps with the pain, but my quality of life sure isn't what it used to be. Feel free to email me, if you would like more info.

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified...

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
