Tell us a bit about yourself!! :)

Karen

AussieJade Rookie

OK then :)

I was diagnosed 6 years ago at age 19 - It was soon after my mum and 6 yr old bro at the time were diagnosed with coeliac. I am also a Type I (Juvenile) Diabetic - so im one of the LUCKY ones lol ;) ;)

As u can see from my avator im "another" cat lover :) (ive seen quite a few other avators with cats on them :P). Im also a big music fan!! Guy Sebastian, Michael Jackson, Ricky Martin and Michael Buble   in paticular :P

Canadian Karen Community Regular

There are certainly lots of cat lovers here!!! LOL!

One of my favourite gluten free snacks is from Australia. But I can't find them up here anymore. Snakatas crackers, they come in four different flavours, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream & Chives, Supreme Cheddar and BBQ. They are soooo delicious but the store that carried them up here closed down...... :( Your lucky to be down there and pig out on them, I miss them terribly!!!!

I must admit us Aussies are pretty lucky with our gluten free food. Our supermarkets (grocery stores) have a big selection of Gluten free food - it is becoming more and more common which is good for me :)

As for Sakata - they are like a staple food here now lol :P NOT just coeliacs - everyone eat them and they are redily available. Sorry to hear u cant get them anymore :(

Guest Viola

Hello .. Welcome to the board. I'm another Canadian and I thought we needed to stick a dog in ... just for balance

I used to get some wonderful soup base cubes from Australia, but they diappeared off the shelf as well. I was told because they didn't have French on the label, just English. We are of course a country with TWO official languages. Too bad though, I really used a lot of those cubes :( However, we are fotunate that some new soup base products have shown up in the last couple of years. I've been on the diet for 17 years now, and still am amazed at the improvements since then. We have made great strides, although there is still a long way to go, especially in the restaurant education.

Do you have any problems with restaurants in Australia?

Hey, we Brit's like to use the 'O' too! :)

Where abouts in Oz are you?

My hubbies brother emigrated to Oz 5 yrs ago and now lives in Brisbane-we'd love to visit one day.

Glad you found this site-I've found it very informative.

Cute cat BTW!

Goodaye! :)

Karen in the East and Shirley in BC has said hi, so hi from another Canadian in Alberta. This is a great place and everyone has great input here. So welcome to our club.

AussieJade Rookie

Thankyou all for your warm welcomes :)

Viola - thats too bad that they took the soup cubes off the market in Canada :( I assume it may have been the Massel brand that we get here. But yes - in terms of getting Gluten free items it has come so far in the last 6 year - and i can only imagine the difference in 17 years. Id say its only going to get better :) As for restaurants - I have had some good experiences in "normal" restaurants but still tend to "play it safe" and eat at advertised gluten free restaurants :) Takes the stress out of it all :)

Nikki-Uk - fellow "O" celiac lol ;) I live in Melbourne - but LOVE Brisbane and surrounds tho havent been back for a whille - the weather is so tropical up there :)

Thanx for ur welcome Rusia :D

Hi, I am bumping this up because I have a question.

How are the resources for you in Australia? I might be moving there, and I, obviously, am concerned about maintaining my progress towards getting healthy.

Thanks!

AussieJade Rookie

In my opinion the resources are fantastic!! Our supermarkets have a wide range of Gluten free becoz of the fact gluten-free has become somewhat "fashionable" nowadays. Our food labelling laws are of the highest standard - so there will NEVER be hidden gluten ! :) There are many restaurants (in Melbourne ne way) that cater for Gluten free. If there are any other queries i can help u with - just let me know :)

thank you so much for your reply!

i am so relieved to hear that! B)

Hi, I am from SA near Adelaide. Would you believe that I couldn't even get a gluten-free cake with my coffee at DJ last week ? All they had said 99% gluten-free. I was so hungry. Fancy having to pack your own food in Adelaide !

Saz Explorer

Hi!

Im a Queenslander!

Great to see you here. Im not sure if youve found it yet but we have threads in the internatinal section for us Aussies, one is a general type and another is a discussion about products.

By the way what is Dj's? I've not heard of it?

They had a 99% gluten-free cake. What does that mean?

tracey* Rookie

If it's 99% - it ain't gluten free in my book!!

It might have traces of something in it

David Jones Food Hall has cakes from 'Gourmet Treats from Heaven' and Roberto's and cookies from the Byron Bay Cookie Co. They're gluten free :)

Thank you that’s really helpful, hopeful won’t have to have a biopsy.
    • RMJ
That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?
    • Fayeb23
Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.
