I just found out today that a biopsy that was taken from my intestine on Wednesday tested positive for Celiac Disease, but tested negative for bacteria. I do not know much about the disease except for what I have found on the web. They have scheduled me to see a dietician soon and I am to keep a food log. Can anyone give me advice on how to keep a food log, and explain exactly what I am in for. On top of this I also suffer from a number of health related issues, the biggest one being that I have hypothyroidism and have had to have both sides of my thyroid removed. I was completely healthy until the end of 2000 when I discovered my first thyroid tumor, since then it seems like I am falling apart. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board. I know there are people here with the same situation as yours and I'm sure they'll chime in soon.

The food log is not hard. This is the first one from a google search that I just did that gives you a form to complete. There are tons more and a lot of electronic ones as well.

Going gluten free is not impossible, just takes determination and diligence. Someone said they wish they could get a PhD in label reading. :D

There are a number of links that explain what to avoid like the one on the home page of this site.

The Delphi forum also has lists put together by other Celiacs of mainstream store products that have been checked on. But your best bet is always to read the label. The less processed a food is the better off you are in being certain.

I'm pretty new at this as well and have made some goofs, but you will get the hang of it. Good luck and keep asking questions here. Everyone is nice and always willing to share.

Basically, they want you to write down what you ate, and how much of it you ate. Hopefully, the dietician will be able to help you. You will get the hang of the gluten-free diet, it will just take time. Ask any questions, we will be glad to help!

sherry, i had several meltdowns when 3 of my girls were diagnosed with celiac. we have only been gluten free since jan 1, but it has gotten so much easier already. it seems like there are alot of people on here that have only recently been diagnosed---maybe it's because us newbies just ask alot of questions. you're in good hands here.

I too am new! But I wanted to say welcome! :D I know that I was overwhelmed when I started the diet about a month and a half ago, but it has definantly gotten easier! You will get the hang of it, and you'll be healthier for it! Good Luck!

welcome to the board Sherry, you will get the hang of it. Just keep coming back here to this site for lots of information! There are a ton of resources and helpful people here to help you with any questions that come up.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
