Mama's Italian Restaurant

I went to lunch today at Mama's Italian Restaurant in Oakdale, NY. It was INCREDIBLE!!! I had baked clams and chicken parmigiana with ziti. If I wasn't so full I think I would have wanted to try everything off the menu. And John one of the owners (who is extremely nice) let me try a new garlicy cheese bread he is working on, which at this point ofcourse I was not suprised was delicious!

He also told me about a health food store in Wantagh that I could get rainbow cookies; which ofcourse I promptly went to. I haven't tried them yet but I'll let everyone know how they are.

I'm not sure I stopped smiling the entire meal. I think I thanked every staff member on my way out.

I know not a lot of people on here live on Long Island, but others in NY might want to keep it in mind for if you ever make trips out to the Hamptons in the summer (it's not as far out, but it would be on the way). This would be a detour you would not regret.

What a great day :)

Oh I am so glad that you had such a wonderful experience. I love John he is so great. I get there at least once a week. His wife is really nice to. I love that restaurant so much, and feel so confident in going there.

What did you end up having? I always get the mozerlla sticks they are so good!!!!!!

Hey RG--I live in East Islip, just maybe 2 miles from Oakdale. I work in E. Islip and one of our employees drives here from Merrick everyday--it's not that bad a trip for a good gluten free meal. Wednesday nights is gluten-free pizza night at Mama's--our Suffolk County Celiac Support group eats at Mama's often. Deb

RG - We drove from Westchester so Merrick isn't bad. And actually DH works in Bohemia and drives from Westchester M-F. Trust me it will be worth the drive.

I really wanted Mozarella sticks but I didn't see them on the menu :(

I must have missed it. Oh well next time. Since DH works out there (and I work in the city), I'm gonna take the train out there sometimes after work. And he said he will bring me home takeout from there too.

Deb - Is the pizza doughy or is it thin crust? I love the pizza at Risotteria (which is thin crust), but John seems to make his stuff more doughy. I would love a slice of pizza like that!!

And yes John was such a sweetheart!! To be honest I think I felt more comfortable in that restaurant than just about any other except maybe Risotteria. I can't wait to go back!!!

Jillian- im so jealous that you went there! i have been dreaming about that place since the girl at Risotteria was talking about it...may have to plan a road trip out there at some point :P how long did it take to get there from tarrytown?

jkmunchkin Rising Star

Well we stopped in Manhassett first to get Chris's brother, and then made a few more stops, but it probably would have take us a little over an hour. You definately have to go there next time you're home. Or maybe one night we can take the train out together from the city after work/school. It's a long train ride, but worth it!!!

mookie03 Contributor

sounds worth it to me- im so there!! i told my roommate about this place and she was ecstatic to go (she gets really excited about places i can it)-- ha as an aside, remember ur great chinese experience? Well i was in dc last weekend with her and we went to a nice chinese restaurant-- ordered every sauce on the side and everything was bland as hell...but she just reached for the soy sauce and the salt and didnt complain once, and i was able to have chicken w/ broccoli and shrimp fried rice! (it was no pf changs, but still...) but back to mommas...im drooling over it as we speak...

minibabe Contributor

If you guys take the train I could pick you up from the train station and drive you across the street :) Next week is no good for me because I will be away for training for my job. But I am up for next weekend or the sometime the week after. Looking foward to it. Anymore people wanna join or have any input.

Yeah next week isn't really good for me either. I could maybe do the week after. I'd kinda prefer to do a Friday if that's ok with everyone. I know CeliaCruz wants to join also.

Thoughts?

I'm practically drooling at the thought of that chicken parm... Mmmmmmmmm!!!

minibabe Contributor

March 10th works for me! Just say a time that would be good for everyone one. come on we need some more people to go! You say a time and I will give John a call and set it up.

I feel sorry for you! My mom took the NY bar a couple of years ago after graduating from the law school at Queens college, good luck! The NY bar is the worst, and the MPRE sucks anywhere :P

jkmunchkin Rising Star

Yeah I can do a Saturday. Or should we maybe try for a Wednesday and that way we can partake in gluten-free pizza night?!!! Maybe Deb would like to join since she is in E. Islip, and I know CeliaCruz would like to join also.

Suezboss Apprentice

I would want to meet up also!! I always wanted to go to Mama's Italian Restaurant! I go to Cafe Baldo and Outback A LOT, but am getting bored with the lack of variety! I really don't know many other places to eat on LI, so it would be nice to get out!

I'm in Bethpage. (Used to live in Merrick too :D )

mookie03 Contributor

I can do next sat after the exam... or i can do most wednesdays- but my spring break is march 12-18 so i wont be around that week. whatever is best for everyone-- i am so excited!! Yea, i am definitely dreading the bar...it is already taking over my life...but thats ok, i just cant wait till its over!

CeliaCruz Rookie

I can do Saturdays and Wednesdays!

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
