Corned Beef And Cabbage?

GlutenFreeAl

Recommended Posts

GlutenFreeAl Contributor

Does anybody have a good corned beef and cabbage recipe? I very very rarely eat red meat, but my Guiness-drinking Irish boyfriend really wants corned beef and cabbage on Friday and I have no clue how to cook it!

I figure he eats gluten free dinners with me quite frequently (even eating cheeseless Chebe pizza instead of regular pizza!) so the least I can do is eat beef one night of the year for him...

Thanks!

I put mine in the crockpot for 8-10 hours and everyone loves it.

Open Original Shared Link a recipe from Epicurious. As you can see, there are no glutenous ingredients and it's pretty easy, especially -- as pointed out by kabowman -- if you have a crock pot. Enjoy!

You can also use a dutch oven, or pretty much any casserole dish with a cover. I myself, will be making corned beef and cabbage this friday to celebrate my irish heritage.

Put the corned beef in the dutch oven or casserole dish. Cover completely with water and add a tablespoon of whole peppercorns, a couple bay leaves and if you like, a little garlic.

Cook for two hours, then add the chopped cabbage cook for another half hour. People will say to add other veggies, but thats not corned beef and cabbage, thats what known as "boiled dinner".

I grew up on this stuff, just to warn you its.... not for everyone. The irish aren't exactly known for thier culinary skills ( sorry grandma).

my dad used to make us corned beef and cabbage a lot... all I know is he boiled it ALL DAY and it was so tender and yummy.

Just made corned beef and cabbage for 90 people at my restaurant and got raves. I bake my corned beef in the oven with some water in the pan....low and slow. Don't go over 325 degrees and bake until tender and you can put the cabbage right in the pan with the beef. I actually bake the corned beef a couple of days before the event and then slice it and return it to Nescos with the juices that I have saved from the baking and reheat it where it gets even more tender. Then the day of the event, I cut the cabbage into portion sizes and put it in this huge pan with some of the meat juice and bake it in the oven. I boil small red potatoes and carrots on the top of the stove and dinner is served for 90. I have done this for many years now....it is a fund raiser for our snowmobile club. Lots of the same people come back every year. I made 10 huge corned beefs. Barbara

I've found for many people, if its not something you had as a kid, its not something you'll like. I love corned beef and cabbage, but I grew up eating it, so I have a fondness for it. Many people for whom its a new experience don't get it. I'm laughing at my own culture, cause I grew up surrounded by women from Ireland who's idea of how to cook was to put something in a pot with water and boil it for a few hours. And I'm not just talking about potatoes.

I do the same. First I put the cabbage, potatos, and carrots on the bottom. After adding a little water for the veggies, I then place the brisket on top and sprinkle the enclosed spice packet on the brisket. I cook low for 6-8 hours. The juice from the brisket flavors the veggies.

When I was a kid, I was terrified of corned beef and cabbage. Never touched it. The smell conjured up scary old immigrants who peed in jars. But I was visiting my father during St. Patricks Day one year when I was in college and he got this notion to make a New England Boiled Dinner. We went to the supermarket, bought a brisket and followed the directions printed on the package. It was delicious! I've been addicted ever since.

Open Original Shared Link the Martha Stewart recipe.

So, does anyone know if it's possible to get corned beef without sodium nitrate and all the other nasty chemicals that I avoid? My grandfather was Irish and we always used to have corned beef around St. Patricks's day, and often a couple other times a year.

You can brine a brisket yourself to avoid nitrates and what not. The Martha Stewart recipe already posted would work, as would this one by Open Original Shared Link

I hated it as a child. I remember my parents making it and the smell would make me sick. Now I love it. I don't know why I didn't like it then...maybe it was the smell of the cabbage ;)

Celia, that is funny. Perfect imagery! I hated it as a kid, too, but now love it. I think the smells affect kids much more, my kids always hated it, too for that reason. Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!!! ;):P

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.

Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
