I have been Gluten -free since thursday (at least i think i have) I have not watched cross contamination as much at home as i probably should. I really don't feel any different, but I am guessing it may take a while. My problem is terrible headaches, I have had one everyday since going Gluten-free, is this common and what medicine is okay to take?

I've been gluten free for 6 months and have had tgerrible headaches this week. I think it's the pollen. I take excedrin migraine. It took me quite a while to be truly gluten free. I'd think I was doing so good and then I figure out something had it that I didn't expect.

Migraines are 100% a symptom of celiac, as are headaches. If they don't clear up in a few days, you may want to talk to your md about Imitrex or one of the other medications available. My migraines got worse when I went gluten-free at first. I think your body gets more sensitive to everything when you're in the recovery process. That's just my two cents though. I hope you feel better soon!

When I get a bad headache like that, I take Tylenol #1 with codeine. Up here in Canada, you can get them over the counter, without a prescription. I certainly don't have to worry about the constipation part of the side effects! I only wish it would happen!!

Hugs.

Headache can also be part of the healing process. Hopefully, they won't last too much longer :)

mbg98 Please be sure about all the weird places gluten can show up like Sunny Delight, Jimmy Dean Sausage etc. Hidden gluten is a big challenge for even us veterans--me 3 years running. If that's not it, try excluding oats too. Also I get terrible- and I mean TERRIBLE headaches now if I eat any peanuts, peanut butter etc, where I never used to before I got completely Gluten Free. This was extraordinalrily dissaointing because I am a self acclaimed peanut butter freak! I think I was so "clogged" up with gluten my body just never knew to what it was reacting at any given point, but now that THAT is cleared up, it's free to torture me with other intolerances now too. Disappointing, yes but beats the pants off a skull cracking headache!! Luck and Stay Healthy! Dove

Thanks everyone, I have really been trying to watch what I eat, I have only been eating whole natural foods, using canola oil and salt and pepper for cooking. I was wondering though, I bought diet sprite which is flavored with splenda, is splenda safe? Are there any headach meds you know of off hand that are not gluten-free?

mbg98--I know that Tylenol Fast Acting Capsules are not gluten free. Splenda is gluten-free.

Hmm, Sprite does give me a headache too. I forgot as it has been a LONG time since I had ANY soft drinks. I don't know if it may be the splenda in it or not, but I do not use the packaged splenda anymore-as its main ingredient is an unidentified MALTODEXTRIN. Probably just used in the powdered form. but if I don't know I just don't use it. It wasn't worth calling-I just use a little sugar now, and generally my headaches have stopped. Maybe someone else knows?

I have suffered with migraines for 22 years and have recently become aware of Celiac Disease in my family. I have been on a gluten-free diet since march 21st. At first my headaches were improving and needless to say we were extactic. Now they are returning and with a vengence. I am trusting in the process and that my body will equalize and start to heal itself. There is such a thing as some kind of rebound effect. The first 10 days on the diet I could not leave the house due to diarreha. I am determined to find my health no matter what it takes. Strength to all of you!

I tried pop sweetened with Splenda once, and once only. I had a bad headache and I was sure it was from the pop. I also got bad headaches when I tried pop sweetened with Nutrasweet when it first came out. So now I drink water.

If your headaches don't get better you may want to ask your doctor about Imitrex or Relpax. I take Relpax for my migraines-it is the ONLY thing that works. 50 tylenol can't help me when I have a migraine. I get nausea, light sensitivity, and flu like symptoms.

If your headaches get worse ask you dr about those meds. They work wonders.

One thing to investigate as a possible cause for headaches, especially after changing your diet is blood sugar. You should be able to rule out or confirm this by keeping a food/symptom journal and seeing when your headaches come on. I get headaches if I have gone too long w/o eating. Either way a food/symptom journal may help you find the cause.

I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.

@par18, no, Scott's use of the term "false negative" is intentional and appropriate. The "total IGA" test is not a test used to diagnose celiac disease per se. The IGA immune spectrum response encompasses more than just celiac disease. So, "total IGA" refers to the whole pie, not just the celiac response part of it. But if the whole pie is deficient, the spectrum of components making it up will likely be also, including the celiac disease response spectrum. In other words, IGA deficiency may produce a tTG-IGA score that is negative that might have been positive had there not been IGA deficiency. So, the tTG-IGA negative score may be "false", i.e, inaccurate, aka, not to be trusted.

This may be the problem. Every time you eat gluten it is like giving a booster shot to your immune system, telling it to react and produce antibodies again.

Scott, I am mostly asymptomatic. I was diagnosed based on high antibodies, low ferritin (3) and low vitamin D (10). I wasn't able to get in for the biopsy until 3 months after the blood test came back. I was supposed to keep eating gluten during this time. Well why would I continue doing something that I know to be harmful for 3 more months to just get this test? So I did quit gluten and had the biopsy. It was negative for celiacs. I continued gluten free with iron supps and my ferritin came back up to a reasonable, but not great level of around 30-35.  Could there be something else going on? Is there any reason why my antibodies would be high (>80) with a negative biopsy? could me intestines have healed that quickly (3 months)?  I'm having a hard time staying gluten free because I am asymptomatic and i'm wondering about that biopsy. I do have the celiacs gene, and all of the antibody tests have always come back high. I recently had them tested again. Still very high. I am gluten free mostly, but not totally. I will occasionally eat something with gluten, but try to keep to a minimum. It's really hard when the immediate consequences are nil.  with high antibodies, the gene, but a negative biopsy (after 3 months strict gluten-free), do i really have celiacs? please say no. lol. i think i know the answer.  Asa
