one of my twins has lost 3 1/2 lbs in just over a week. ( 1 1/2 lbs in 2 days) our ped gi is on vacation for a week. i don't know how to get and keep weight on this child. she had gotten up to 81 lbs, but is now down to 73 1/2. she has once (that i know of) cheated on the diet and ate 5 pieces of a toxic cereal. i explained to her that a crumb is too much. she also picked m&m's out of a cookie crumb filled bowl---even though her twin told her not to. would these contaminations cause her to lose weight? she has also gotten rashes back on her elbows.

Hi, are your sure she hasn't gotten into anything else? I know it can be tempting for children to cheat. Also, did she have any symptoms after she cheated? I know that having "D" can cause weight loss as well as the malasorption. I am not sure though if such a small amount can cause such drastic weight loss. I would call your Pediatrician since your GI is on vacation (or maybe he has a covering doctor).

I'm assuming your peds GI isn't practicing alone -- I'd call the office and ask them for another doctor there to give you an opinion, or call your pediatrician. But it seems to me that yes-- being glutenated could cause that much weight loss if she has D. Try rice, bananas, chicken, applesauce, and chocolate Ensure until she is gaining again, and lock up the forbidden foods if she's a cheater. (Peanut butter is another thing with lots of calories, if she's not allergic; milkshakes are good too)

If she can have dairy give her gingerale and light cream to drink - once or twice a day. It is an old remedy that came from a doctor back when doctors didn't always reach for the prescription pad. My frail aunt was given this and though she stayed thin she weighed about 90 pounds - compared to the 75 pounds that she was before. Claire

My gluten intolerant 3 year old has been drinking soy milk for the past 2 years. Now I'm starting to freak out. My little guy drinks it too. Do I really need to be worried about this?

My dd had her thyroid tested in Aug. and her TSH was 2.75. They said that was normal. She had another test too that was supposedly normal.

I guess we should try to get her onto a different milk. It's hard when they can't handle dairy and Rice Dream contains gluten...

I don't have kids so I'm really clueless. Many here know a lot more then I do. But I would stay away from soy at all expense.

Shannon--I use Vance's Dari free--it's a potato based milk type beverage. It's very good--I know some others on here use it for their kids. I can't handle soy or rice, so it's been great for me.

Being an adult, I don't know that my experience would equate with your daughter's, but yes, being glutened (and for me 5 pieces of cereal would be a severe glutening right now), I get thrown back into malabsorption and drop 3-5 lbs over the next few days. (This is regardless of the severity of the D)

3-5 lbs for my body is a different percentage than for your child, but if 5 pieces of cereal would do this to my larger body, I would imagine it could do the same to her smaller body. I don't know, but I'm supposing that as I get further out in my recovery, I won't be tossed into malabsorption as quickly. (Seems reasonable that once healed, and no longer teetering on the edge of what was complete villi atrophy, the damage would not revert so quickly, but again, this is just an asumption on my part.)

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
