Celiac and coughing

Good morning. I am new to this forum and am so glad to have found it. My mom (81) has moved in with me. She is a celiac, which we are doing well getting in a groove with that. My question is this, do any of you have a horrific cough? She has had every text under the sun completed with the final result being “allergy cough”. I’m leaning more towards anxiety. She coughs all day (I mean she really coughs to the point of loosing her breath) and all night...and has for years. Last night, when I climbed into bed with her, she stopped and didn’t cough for the rest of the night. Other little things I’ve started to pay more attention to makes me lean in this direction. Are any of you on a anxiety medication? If so, which one?

Thank you!!

Welcome to the forum, Kari!

I have not heard of anxiety causing coughing but it seems we learn something new on this forum almost everyday.

But let's look at some more common causes.

What meds is your mother on? Does she take any blood pressure meds or diuretics? There is one of those that is famous for causing coughing but I can't remember which one it is?

Do second generation antihistamines like Zyrtek help?

Has she been checked for acid reflux?

Given her age and health, is she on Lisinopril or a generic for it to control blood pressure? The short time I was on it I got an inguinal hernia from the persistent cough, a known and common side effect of Lisinopril. Multiple vitamin and minerals deficiencies are often found in Celiac Disease.

Be aware that acid reflux can be "silent", i e not experienced as heartburn or indigestion, but irritate the airways which could explain the coughing.

Hi Kari

Does your mum drink a lot of Tea, a lady I knew had a terrible cough for years no Dr. found the answer, I knew that Tea could affect me, not by coughing but in other ways, anyway I said to this lady try stopping the Tea, I saw her a month later and she said that it had worked, now,  I believe I know why it worked because of what happened to me, I was reacting to Histamine/ acids/ milk,  Tea is on the high histamine list, so maybe try your Mum on a low histamine diet for a few weeks ( a dietitian may help with this)and see how it goes or just try stopping the Tea, I now have herbal teas, peppermint, she probably won’t like the idea of stopping Tea, I didn’t, but it may stop her cough, I would suggest looking into Histamine intolerance, but firstly a persistent cough needs to be checked out by a Dr.  thats very important.

My biggest symptom when I get glutened is a nasty cough for 10-20 minutes. Are you sure she is not getting glutened.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
