Have I been glutened?

Courts

Courts Newbie

Hello,

I was diagnosed with coeliac earlier this year, I have been gluten free for about 4 months now.

I have just eaten out at the Hard Rock Cafe, I had a cheeseburger (I am almost definately lactose intolerant, but I havent cut out dairy yet).

I have had the most terrible diarrhoea (coming out of me like water), pelvic and leg pain. I made sure I got the gluten free option, did not share napkins, salt, ketchup etc.

I ask because normally I would put this down to cheese, but I have never had symptoms this severe, do you think it is just the dairy or have I been glutened? No one else from the party is unwell.

FYI in the past when I have accidentally ate gluten, I've never felt as ill as this.

Thank you!

Could be severe cross contamination. The longer youre gluten free, usually the worse the reaction to comtamination. Or they could have given you a normal bun and said gluten-free. Fries are usually always contaminated as well from the fryer and some places even coat them in flour to make em crispier.

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately eating at restaurants is probably the most common cause of gluten contamination, even if they offer a gluten-free menu. It may be too late, but this may help:

Sounds like you got gluten.. have to remember the people that make our foods really don’t care about us !! So be careful I try to only go to places that has separate kitchen for gluten free foods and it’s not that many but you have to do your research before you go out !

Probably from cross contamination in their kitchen, but one thought ...

Did you have french fries (chips) with it? If something is deep fried in a fryer that also fries gluten foods, it gets contaminated.

A quick heads-up - I have recently found out that many restaurants in my part of the world use pre-prepared "reconstituted" chips and the majority appear to contain gluten.

Yes, chips like Pringles may contain wheat starch.

Quick update.  I saw the title of this thread and forgot that I'd actually started it!  Oh dear! It seems my new healthy diet was the cause of these symptoms,  I had a clear colonoscopy, thankfully. Now I know what it is I shall try to resume the healthy diet - the symptoms are annoying rather than painful, and I think it was doing me a lot of good, I certainly lost some pounds around the waistline (pity they piled back on again at Christmas!)

Stegosaurus, One size doesn't fit all. Most celiacs do fine with oats and other non-gluten cereal grains. Grains can contribute important nutrients to the diet and are a relatively inexpensive food energy sources. I don't agree with the position that all celiacs should eliminate all grains from their diet. This line of thinking has been promoted for years by books like Dangerous Grains which make the case on logic rather than actual real world data. Like many biological phenomenon, what would seem to be logical doesn't pan out to be true in the real world.  But if you are one of those in the minority of celiacs who cannot tolerate cereal grains at all, I'm glad that you were able to sort that out.

While it's true that lifting heavy weights is a good bone builder, it may not be advisable for those with certain medical conditions like heart disease, arthritis and for the elderly or for those who don't have access to the equipment.  Bone building drugs like Fosamax slow down the disposal of worn out osteoclasts (bone cells) and so help maintain/restore bone density as seen in scans but because the retained cells are no longer healthy, the process may contribute less to actual bone strength than healthy cells would.
