Hi Donna--Love your picture, but *ouch!* about your ankle! :o Hope it heals quickly. Interesting how everyone (except me) had heard about problems with dried fruit....

Hi everyone--I think I was glutened yesterday by Assencia Pure Maple Syrup--Acme's own brand. I had been using it frequently over my fruit in tne morning. I was having symptoms in the afternoons, but never figured it could be the syrup because it only has one ingredient. I had not had it in a while, so I used some yesterday. Sure enough, I had D (had to run to bathroon) in the afternoon. Nothing else different at all. It is probably bottled in the same place as gluten--who knows where some of these store brands are processed...I have had similar problems with Whole Foods 365 Brand. I'm steering clear of those from now on. <_<

Hi Armetta--Sorry you are not doing well :( I hope some of the new recipes will work out for you! I love chick peas, I wish they liked me :D

Floridian,

I have a lot of vegan cookbooks and am glad if I can help anyone out.

Donna,

I also like your avatar. I like pictures of people themselves, there children/babies and the animals. I'll change mine to one that was taken about 3 months ago so you all can see what I look like.

Rachel,

Hope you survived last night. Can you send some sunshine our way? Haven't checked the forecast but it's been really rainy lately.

Julie and Armetta,

Hope you are feeling better today.

Miamia,

Any picture coming up soon? Hope your day goes well.

Hope I didn't forget anyone. :P

Fiddle-Faddle,

This is so embarrassing--I don't knwo HOW to do an avatar.

AndreaB Contributor
awww you poor little thing... go to your control panel, click change atavar, click browse, find a pic of your self on your computer, highlight it then click open, your file should show in the empty box next to the browse button, then click update.... let me know if your having trouble, I will help. :)

Actually it's My Controls on the top of the page next to View New Posts.

On the left side column, read down until you find edit avatar settings and click that.

Then follow Floridian. :P

Patti,

I left you out of my earlier "hi". Sorry, didn't mean to. Give that ankle some rest and hope it feels better soon.

Hi everyone!

Lots of new posts this morning.

Donna, you look great. I think you posted earlier that people think you're in your 30's...well I would guess the same. :)

Andrea, I wish I could send you some sun. It was really hot here yesterday and a beautiful night. The weather has been perfect but after I washed my car last Sunday it got cold for a couple days and even rained a little. It never fails. <_<

I had a great time last night and I didnt take a single sip of alcohol. :D

It was my first time going to a bar and not drinking...every time the guys ordered a drink they ordered me a water...so I had lots of water and many visits to the restroom. Not much different than if I'd been drinking all night.

The strip bar wasnt that bad...the guys I was with were great and did everything to make it a fun night and make sure I was comfortable too. I was tempted a couple times to have a drink but the fear is way stronger than the desire for a drink so I didnt cave. I'm glad I went. :)

Armetta and Jersey,

I'm sorry you guys are'nt feeling well. :(

Its really frusterating and I feel your pain. I wish I could take it away for all of us. Like my Mom said last night....everytime she gets to make a wish she doesnt wish for a million dollars or anything frivilous...she always wishes I could be healthy again. Thats what I wish for too...for all of us.

Thank you everyone for the Get Well wishes. I am doing better today, so the anitbiotics must have kicked in. The big rock on my chest has become a little rock. Hope I can get to the store tomorrow and see what I can find to make the hummus recipes that AndreaB so nicely posted. Andrea, THANK YOU for those recipes. Andrea, I am also going to go to the dairy substitude topic and see about the margarine.

Donna, I love your Avitar. You are a very pretty young women. some day I will have a picture up here of me. I printed out how to do your Avitar for future use.

Rachel, I am so glad that you had a good time last night. You don't have to drink to have fun as you know. It is the company that makes it fun.

I would also like to thank those that have emailed me prayers. They are always welcome and they must be working. I even stopped wheezing last night so I was able to get 7 hours of sleep.

Yup, I'm having trouble! The picture I've got isn't on a jpeg file, it's just in a WORD file. How do I transfer it to an uploadable file?

Thanks...

Hey, Floridian--I just heard that potatoes are top of the list in produce that absorbs large amounts of pesticides. I think Consumer Reports came out with some kind of list. Apparently, I 'm poisoning my children by giving them non-organic strawberries every day. Could that be contributing to your spud troubles? Would organic potatoes solve the problem? (Just what you need--another MORE expensive product to look for!)

I swear, we just can't win!

I'm not sure if this will be listed as an option but when you are in you word document. Hilite the picture and right click to see what options it gives you. You want to try to save the file as something else. I don't have word or I would play with it and see if it works. I have works. I'll see if I can figure out something from the documents I have that have pictures in them.

I'm curious about this too. All of my photos are scanned and in my adobe photoshop. I cant upload them because they arent the right file type. I've had to rescan the photo and using a different software I was able to make it a jpeg file but is there an easier way w/out having to rescan the photos? I'm lazy.

Andrea...what a cutie your baby is!! :)

I love it that everyone is putting their photos up. :)

I don't think there is an easier way. I just tried playing with works and saving a document with just one picture on it and I couldn't load it to my photo program or paint because it wasn't the right format.

Scanning is the best way. If you guys don't have digital cameras you can get your photos on celiac disease to upload to the computer. Those are usually to big so you'd have to edit them down. I'm probably one of the few that doesn't have a digital camera.

Thanks Andrea,

I do have a digital camera and those pictures are actually already in the right format so I just use those pics but 99% of my pics need to be scanned since I almost always use my regular camera instead of my digital one. I just like getting them developed and then picking them up all shiny and glossy. I'm a scrapbooker so I take tons of pictures. Of course it would save me plenty of money to not buy the film and not have to pay for developing but whatever...maybe someday I'll learn. I still write checks for everything and dont have an ATM card. I'm like the only person who doesnt have one. My bank never gave me one and I just didnt bother to ask. I figured I've survived this long w/out one....why do I need it?

When you get your film developed have them put the prints on celiac disease also. Then you can load them to your computer, edit them and upload them.

You know I put celiac disease in and it changed it to Celiac Disease. At least I think I did.

It did it again. :lol::ph34r:

How about C.D.? Will that stay as it's typed. :o

Oh Rachel--an ATM card is the way to go! I use mine for absolutely everything. The only time I write a check is when I'm paying bills. I literally never have cash or a checkbook in my purse :o

If your a scrapbooker prints are definately needed. We have a regular camera. Need to take more of the baby. Poor thing, we took tons of Talitha, less for Micah and barely any for Seth. So it goes with adding children. :P

I agree with Patti, cards are much easier though. Your bank would be glad to get one ordered for you. It's a personal choice though. The thing with cards is not to forget to add it to your register.

I was thinking about something today. I've been gluten-free for a year now (since 6/2/05). I'm pretty good at not getting gluten as I don't eat out (twice in the year) and do all the cooking/cleaning up in my kitchen. Since I figured out my intolerances, I've been feeling good. As I wrote earlier, I think I got glutened yesterday--I had the GI stuff--D and some mild cramping last night. This morning, I had a touch of that, but ate a banana, a few almonds and went to the grocery store. I was ready to have to rush to the restroom, but I felt fine--and I found myself SINGING in the car while driving home! Do you ladies think that maybe I've healed some to the point where the gluten incidents won't be as bad or long? I know from reading here that it can take up to 2 years for someone my age (and sick for a long time) to heal. I was thinking maybe I'm halfway there?

Andrea--You brought up the most important thing--as soon as I come home, I put the receipts into the checkbook so I don't forget to subtract them!

jerseyangel Proficient

Thanks Celia, I wanted to see if what I thought made sense to anyone else other than me! :D It's just strange to see things finally going in a positive direction for a change--I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop

AndreaB Contributor

That's great Patti! Sounds like you have healed quite a bit.

Did you say it was syrup that got you down. Have you tried SpringTree Certified Organic? We don't have obvious gluten symptoms. Of course now that we've gone off it we may start to.

Everyone eat something for my hubby for Fathers Day. He goes on his liquid diet tomorrow in prep for his colonoscopy Monday. What a Fathers Day.:ph34r:

Dont you have to pay bank charges everytime you use the card? If I write a check for cash at my work....I get the cash and no extra charges. I have free checking. I dont ever have cash cuz I either write a check for stuff or use a credit card. If I'm going out where I need cash I get it from my work (or another grocery store) by writing a check. It just seems easier to me.

I do think you've allowed yourself to heal and I think its awesome that you're headed in the right direction and singing in the car! :D

I think when you heal enough reaction times are greatly reduced and not as traumatic. I think not getting glutened is the most important thing but also eliminating the added intolerances is crucial for reducing inflammation and allowing the gut to heal. Sounds like your doing a good job with all that. :)

About the check/atm thing. Everyone I've ever been with got irritated with the fact that I have to go to the grocery store to get some cash but they always have to find an ATM...so whats the difference.

jerseyangel Proficient

The way my card works is that I can get cash (no add'l charges) either while making a purchase anywhere, at the ATM machine at the bank (my bank has a ton of locations--it's everywhere) or at Wawa (a convenience store that is also on almost every corner here in NJ). Getting cash is really not a problem--if I know I'll need some, I'll usually just get it while paying for groceries (use the card for $20 more than the grocery bill, for example). There are no additional charges associated with my card at all--I just have to keep $100 in my checking account at all times--that's it. Since you are at your store anyway, your way is probably just as easy for you as far as getting cash is concerned. I guess I've just gotten used to this, and find it simpler--it's not necessarily better :)

Rachel,

The cards today are multi faceted. They are debit/credit cards that connect directly to your checking account. You can do withdrawals at the ATM for cash if you'd like but they are mostly used for POS (Point of Sale). Most stores accept debit cards and there is no charge to us the card, except for fast food joints. If I need some cash I'll just get cash back when I check out. These cards can also be used as credit cards online instead of having to use a real credit card. They are very handy. I used to work in a bank and when I quit they were just coming out with these (almost 7 years ago).

I was just thinking I really need to put a picture up. I have to see if I even have a recent one I have been avoiding the camera becasue I am so thin and for some reason if its not captured on film I still see myself the way I used to look- I know this is ridiculous.

I eat meat and fish but I find dealing with vegan recipes is the best thing to do when dealing with multi food sensitivities. Gluten cookbooks all call for a zillion ingredients most of which are bad for you so anyones I bought when I first discovered I had to cut out gluten just serve to collect dust pretty much. But using vegan reicpes Ive made some great things. - breads ,crackers, muffins - I think there defintly the way to go.

If you need recipes for anything let me know and I'll look through what I have. I'm no longer vegan but do buy the expensive free range, natural or organic meats. The processed foods we buy right now are the treats from enjoy life or envirokidz. I ordered three gluten free cookbooks that I should be getting at the end of the week. Do you have any tried and true recipes you'd like to share?

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you
    • trents
The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
