Kassandra,

I'm coming in late with my input about the antidepressants.

Just wanted to say that if they dont resolve your depression I probably would recommend stopping and trying some other things.

I was definately anti AD's....I didnt feel like they would help "fix" me....but I was also VERY depressed and really needing some help. I finally gave in after the Dr.'s had been pushing the AD's for months...saying its what I NEEDED to get better.

I took prozac for 2 months....there was no change even though the Dr.'s had said I'd be a "new" person.

I did realize that the Prozac had caused me to totally lose my sex drive....not that it was important at the time...but still...it didnt help my situation and it brought on its own new symptoms.

The Dr. then wanted me to continue with the Prozac and add in Wellbutrin to counteract the loss of sex drive. WTH??

Obviously the pills didnt work for me...I didnt see any benefit in taking additional meds to counteract unwanted side effects of a drug that wasnt helping me in the least bit.

Ultimately, it was diet changes and ONLY diet changes that resolved the depression for me. It was a very rapid and clear improvement that took place after only a short time on the candida diet (days). It was drastic...from severe dpression with suicidal thoughts....to actually laughing, smiling and enjoying life again.

Of all symptoms I think depression is by FAR the worst of all...and it tends to make everything else feel so much worse. I hope the AD works for you because I know what its like to feel this way....but if it doesnt you still have other options that may make a big difference in this area.

Sherry,

I read somewhere that some allergy shots have aluminum as a binder. Just a thought. You might need to check into that.

April

Thanks, I'll check. Though I have taken these for years without problems, so I still think it is seasonal overload.

mftnchn Explorer
:o I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Sherry,

Was aluminum in your metal profile?

I'm sorry you're having a rough time with allergies and such. I hope things calm down soon for you.

Thanks, not sure about the profile. I'll have to check when I get home. Another week here; just a quick read to catch up but no time to post much.

Hi to everyone--I'm here! (waving)

Sherry--

I'm sure this has been suggested before, but have you tried acupuncture for your allergies? It is of course, expensive, but my dad and sister have done it for years (not constantly of course, who can afford that?) and really found relief with it.

That I haven't done though I have tried it for other things.

I've had gua sha on my head twice, and I think it helps a bit.

I'm working on letting people in. It's not easy for me. The reasons behind it are totally involved and blah, but I am working on it, and getting better at telling people how I feel.

The problem is, for so long, since I don't really tell people how I feel, people now think I'm complaining or over-reacting. So, it's not exactly a response to encourage "feeling telling." <_<

I agree the eyes say a lot. You're TOTALLY right about the expectation thing...If I don't feel good, people don't know what to do, my mom included. It's really rough to have everyone "look to me" for health and positivity. Argh...it gets me to after a while.

----

I have decided I am going to try the medication and see how I feel. The fact that I am asking for help in this situation is HUGE growth for me. As Dr H said, I gotta let them help me. Being depressed won't help me get better, that's for sure.

Now I have to figure out a way to not let my mom know...ugh.

Kassandra-

I totally understand the feeling of feeling like you are complaining but alot of this might be in your head since your so used to not saying when somethings worng I used to feel like everytime I said i wasen't feeling well I was being annoying. People did not evevn know I was sick until I got so thin it soulden't be avoided and I realized I would rather let people know what was really going on than letting them just assume I was anoerexic. , bbut it was the best thing I did. I still hate complaining about it but I realize its not m fault!!! That is something I still struggle with and hjave to say to mself alot and I suggest ou do the same. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT !!!!It is not your fault that you are sick !!!! and I think excepting this and reall internalizing this is very important

I never heard of getting high from cake, but I know that there's special brownies out there that do the trick. ;)

P.S.

Although I've never ate them.

i have and they do

Too funny Mia.

I actually cant remember if I've ever had them...or if they did the trick.

Yup...the cognitive problems must have wiped this from my memory completely.

If I ever had them....I'm sure they were yummy. :D

About the getting high on cake, I mentioned it here before, just check out reichelt and gliadin in a search engine....there are opioid sequences in gliadin and casein proteins. This is what autists react to. Are you an Aspie, Rachel??

About what ldn is, it is Low Dose Naltrexone, brought up here as one of the latest things going on.

I read on the ldn websites and sometimes check the forums. The yahoo groups are more busy (there are several of them, owned by several different persons/organisations)

Funnily they bring up the subject of Lyme all the time, almost every day.

Brenda says that those 15% of MS patietns that do not get better on ldn, most likely are misdiagnosed and have lyme instead.

Here is a posting I read the other day:

"> I AM wondering tho' why the newly diagnosed with Lyme are dropping

> from here

>

> there IS some potential for LDN and Lyme that doesnt seem to improve

> after meds ( or herbs etc)( due to autoimmune responses and many

> getting dysautonomias etc triggered by Lyme--not to mention those

> with Lyme AND other stuff)

>

> Does anyone have any ideas why theyve left LDN?? and if anyone who

> hasnt seen much improvement with the usual Lyme protocols added back

> LDN???

> thats what Im hoping to do with my son (18).

>

> thanks

> Finette

================

The first group dropped out before lyme docs started adding LDN to the

lyme treatment protocol. Dr. Bihari said that LDN plays a limited

role in lyme. It does not work the same on lyme as it does with

autoimmune diseases and certain forms of cancer.

Since there are too many people out there misdiagnosed, 1 misdiagnosed

person is detrimental in my book, I prefer to recommend getting the

BVPM test and or the IGeneX Lab tests. I watched a 10 year old boy

lose his childhood over a misdiagnosis. Diagnosed with MS, by the age

of 12 he was completely wheelchair bound, totally catatonic(non-

responsive/like a vegetable) and the only way he could move was when

his grand-mal seizures threw him out of his chair or bed. By the time

he was 18 his parents had him re-tested by another doctor who used

IGeneX Labs and found he had lyme, not MS. With lyme treatment he now

walks with a walker and is trying to catch up on all those years of

school missed due to a misdiagnosis. This is why I am so pushy on

this subject. I do not want to see someone suffer like that young man

suffered.Brenda"

No..I'm not on the spectrum. I was "normal" until age 31. I have mercury toxicity...which isnt any different from what the kids on the spectrum are dealing with. The only real significant difference is that I'm an adult and I'm not affected in the same way because I'm not in the early stages of development.

I don't actually get a high from opiates in gliadin or casein. I dont react that way to those foods. This is more common with children. I can eat gluten and dairy w/out getting the feeling of being high.

Its preservatives, food colorings, additives and those types of things that cause a feeling of being high for me.

The kids on the spectrum tend to also have behavioral problems from these chemicals as well as the opiates from gliadin and casein.

If these things cant be broken down and eliminated they will circulate and cause symptoms.

Alot of the kids do much better when taking an enzyme with high amounts of DPPIV. In many cases the symptoms caused by gluten and dairy are eliminated comepletey once the child is taking an enzyme to digest the proteins. DPPIV is required for digesting gluten and dairy....this enzyme is particularly sensitive to mercury and is inhibited/blocked in most kids who are on the spectrum.

For those of you who don't know we are talking about how hard it is to not feed our bugs.

More children nowadays suffer from fatty livers. It becomes chirrossis(sp?) of the liver and maybe hepatitis. We only heard of this from alchohalism. But I believe that sugar is a form of alchohal. I guess sugar breaks down into some kind of alchohal state.

I think thats why things that contain a lot of sugar our body can't handle it. You make vodka from potatoes, scotch from sugar cane and whiskey from corn. They are then distilled and become alchohal.

Maybe this is why you had a handover Rachel. Basically you must have drank a six pack of beer ^_^ when you ate that whole cake.

Yup...and I went out dancing that night too. At least I dont need to shell out the $$ for drinks when I got my own brewery going on inside....my buzz is FREE. :D

I think my enzyme which renders the yeast by-products (alcohol) harmless...is not functioning. I think this stuff is pretty potent when you cant get rid of it.

It is the same for me in terms of which foods make me "high" there are these gluten free snap pea things -really yummy- and when i use to eat them I would always end up dinging out lod on the street and doing all sorts of weird stuff- I don't eat them anymore(funny face )

I'm going to have a full body nettie pot rinse in the Gulf of Mexico today! LOL I'm at the airport waiting for our flight.

LUCKY!!

I feel more scared of myself than anything else right now. Did you know that bad yeast is more toxic than any chemical out thier? That's kind of scarey. Sometimes I have to remind myself of that.

I feel ya on that one. I will go a few days without any sugar and even to the point where i'm past the cravings and then all of a sudden it's in front of me and i'm like oh why not? it's so stupid.

Rachel--I totally get "high" when i eat sugar, so i know what you're talking about. And friends get jealous of me too, i'm like, believe me, you don't want this high.. much prefer special brownies.. but that'd be like a double dose right now! haha.

IS there any alcohol we can have? seriously??

Kassandra,

I've been on anti-depressants since 5th grade. I've gone through all of them. Now I take Cymbalta. I've taken it on and off for about 2 years. It's the best one. I also get needles in my ears at the acupuncturist that stay in for 2 weeks. Omega three is also really great. I've tried being off of drugs for depression--not since going off gluten--but i've never been "okay" off them. I think alot of it has to do with circumstance and health. i know when i feel like crap, my depression is high. and that makes sense to me. I was off them for awhile but knew i needed the extra support. in my opinion--yeah--avoid them if you can. But if you're really sad and using all your energy just to maintain mental health, then you aren't going to have any energy for food-health stuff, let alone social, etc. If an anti-depressant helps you focus on other things, then i say go for it and dont' stress about it. Cymbalta targets physical symptoms of depression too, so it may help you FEEL better. Plus it's not known to mess with sex drive, like Prozac or Wellbutrin, etc. or at least not as much.

But i can relate to what Rachel is saying about diet. When i eat sugar, i definitely get agitated and sad the next day--in they way alcohol does.

In Other News

I am soooooo sick of working at Panera. I am a walking contradiction. I am hoping my interview goes well on wednesday. I have my dads car this week so i'm trying to get more hours at Panera. I picked up half of a friends shift tomorrow, so i'll be working from 10am until 7pm. whatttttttttt? yeah. it will suck.

tired. hungry. fussy.

Once you get past the cravings its not all that bad...but once you indulge...you gotta go through the whole process all over again. It sucks.

I was strict for 4 months...not even a pinch of the stuff....no carbs either. That was almost 3 years ago. Since then I havent been so strict. I eat sugar....I just try not to go crazy with it. Theres alot of other "healthier" foods that do me in worse than sugar...so thats my reasoning. :P

Yup....friends will make their comments about how "lucky" I am. I get high off food and I eat big pieces of cake and LOSE weight instead of gaining!

I say the same thing....You dont want this!! Not fun!!

Yeah...special brownies might kill me right now!!

No thanks....a regular brownie is all I need.

Seriously??

If there's an alcohol out there that tastes like alcohol and has the same effect as alcohol....but is not actually recognized by my body as *being* alcohol...I havent found it yet.

Maybe I should invent some!! :o Rinne....I might need your creativity on this one!!

Sorry....I only have bad news for you on the alcohol situation. :(

Those of us with the yeast issues have more than enough alcohol already....unfortunately its not nearly as enjoyable as the kind you can drink. <_<

Hi everyone! Just a quick drive-by ... I did go swimming in the Gulf today ... I was sure I got plenty of salt water up my nose, LOL ... and it did clear my head. Just a minor cough now. I feel much, much better after some fresh air, sunshine and my full body nettie pot .

I'm dragging just a little from the upper respiratory infection .... other than that, I'm feeling GREAT again. :)

I hope everyone is feeling good. :)

Another drive-by. Must be a trend tonight.

I'm doing much better these days. The migraines and vomiting episodes have gone away since I stopped taking the Mino.

I'm on day 2 of Zith and no side effects so far. *knock wood* Other than knots in my right shoulder and neck that won't go away, I'm actually feeling pretty good. Even the tingling has died down to almost nothing. Yay!

Supposed to start Ceftin either tomorrow or Tuesday. Hope that goes as well as the Zith.

Getting a brain MRI tomorrow to check for swelling and other fun stuff. A friend of mine has offered to get in touch with a few neuroradiologists she knows (who are lyme literate) for 2nd and 3rd opinions. For free! It's good to know people who know people. :D

Will update again once I get my results.

Hope everyone's doing well (haven't caught up yet). :)

Ok, i have started back on the candida diet. I am already going crazy, my body wants starburst so bad. I know i have to stick with it if i want to feel better from all this mold.

I also wanted to add, that since we have started to really clean this house, I am feeling better. I still have not found mold anywhere else. Well there was mold starting to grow in one vent cause one of my lovely kids threw an oreo in there. Thank goodness i had an mask on when i found it and screamed for hubby to come clean it.

Good for you for getting back on the candida diet!

Hrm.

So I get there, get in the machine *bump bump click click click*, and tech comes in. The tech, btw, was extremely cute although not a whole lot of personality. But anyway.....

He said he called the radiologist while I was in there (heckuva time to call). The radiologist said that in order to get a better look at what's going on in my head, they'd need me to go in the regular MRI. Apparently, white matter lesions from lyme don't just jump out at you.

I'm now rescheduled for 9:30 at night this Wednesday.

At least all the paperwork's done.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you

The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
