Megan's First Birthday

Just wanted to let all of you know that my baby girl had a wonderful gluten free first birthday. Because of her heart surgeries, I made her a gluten free heart shaped cake with pink cream cheese icing. It was delish! She couldn't eat any because of her gagging issues, but she had fun playing in her cupcake. Thanks for all the support over the past few months. She's doing so much better now that we're gluten-free.

We went to a feeding clinic yesterday and her dietician's mother-in-law has celiac disease. It's so awesome to have someone who understands to help us at last! Just had to share my excitement!!! The new dietian has also found something called Compleat Pediatric, which is something we can give her by her feeding tube to increase her caloric intake and put some weight on her before surgery. I hope it works since all the formulas made her sooo sick. This is basically blenderized whole foods like beef and carrots, etc. The only thing she has tolerated so far is breast milk and my supply is falling off.

We also got a call from Vanderbilt today and the next sugery is scheduled for August 15. Please keep her in your prayers.

Gotta go get the little princess into her bed. She's snoozing in her swing at the moment after a long day of partying!

So happy she had a great birthday and she will have many more to come. Ones where she will be able to eat her gluten-free cake.

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.

Thanks @Scott Adams. Do you know if Kirkland Signature supplements share facility and production lines with other products containing gluten?  I'm worried that I'll react to this brand just like I did with other gluten-free labelled supplement brands.

This is a really common area of confusion. Most natural cheeses (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, Parmesan, brie, camembert, and most blue cheeses) are inherently gluten-free, and you’re right that the molds used today are typically grown on gluten-free media. The bigger risks tend to come from processed cheeses: shredded cheese (anti-caking agents), cheese spreads, beer-washed rinds, smoke-flavored cheeses, and anything with added seasonings or “natural flavors,” where cross-contact can happen. As for yeast, you’re also correct — yeast itself is gluten-free. The issue is the source: brewer’s yeast and yeast extracts can be derived from barley unless labeled gluten-free, while baker’s yeast is generally safe. When in doubt, sticking with whole, unprocessed cheeses and products specifically labeled gluten-free is the safest approach, especially if you’re highly sensitive.
