Sence Of Taste?

I have been gluten-free for almost a year now. Not doing bad with it other than the darn rash on my back side. The steroid cream seems to keep that in check. Now a new one cropped up and I wounder if it is from celiac or something else I have been blessed with. I seem to have lost my sence of taste. I have taste but it is vile. My own seliva makes me sick. I can load up what ever I eat with hot peppers spices or whatever and it makes my eyes water and nose run but leaves me with a taste I can't keep down. It is so hard to explain this problem so if anyone has this or has had this you know what I am talking about. Has this happened because of the celiac or is it unrelated?

Jess

Jess,

Not to alarm you, but one of the things that can cause a loss of smell and taste senses is brain tumors.

Also, besides the steriods for the butt rash, are you on any new medications?

Have you sought medical attention for this problem?

I lost my sense of taste for about three months after a bout with bronchitis. I agree, you definitely need to see the doctor. Whatever it is can become permanent if you don't get it treated.

have you looked into candida? I know it can cause rashes and is very common among celiacs.

My sense of taste (and smell) is always affected when I get a cold or a sinus infection. It can last for 2-3 weeks. Do you have a post nasal drip? That could explain the taste.

Loss of taste and smell can be a side effect of some meds - my mom stopped some of hers because it was so annoying.

Ok, here is the deal. 7 weeks ago I had a spinal fusion and rods installed from my butt to my neck. It was in the hospital I lost the sence of taste and smell as well as hearing in my right ear. After the resultes came back just today, I had lost spinal fluid and my brain fell down onto my skull. Thats hard to believe. Anyway it pressed the nerves somehow at the spot in my brain that takes care of these sences. I have since regained the hearing and some smell but the taste is still gone. Nothing they can do about it but wait and see if it comes back.

I gotta tell ya, it sucks to be me. This stuff just will not stop. I feel like I am with in inches of turning into a cartoon character.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
