Craving What Hurts You?

I am curious as I have done a lot of reading on allergies and such and there is a lot of controversy that people crave foods that actually harms them. For instance, a person who loves milk and dairy and can not get enough of it may have a hidden allergy to it. The same may apply for gluten and I was wondering if anyone has found this to be the case for them?

My 4 year old LOVES bread, crackers, and such. If I take a look at what he seems to crave it is all likely to contain gluten.

Just one of those really curious questions.

Yep. I don't scientifically understand why that happens, but I used to be a bread addict. It was all I ever wanted to eat. I had really intense cravings for dairy too. Now that all that stuff is out of my system though, I don't crave it at all.

Yes, I believe this to be true. The things I crave most are German rye bread, tomatoes, juice, ice cream and potatoes.

When eating some rye bread I finally connected the dots last October. Within half an hour of eating it, I was doubled over with severe stomach cramps, and soon explosive diarrhea. I react very badly to gluten, obviously!

My favourite food all my life was potatoes. It causes me gastrointestinal problems similar to being glutened, with the addition of burning bms.

I used to eat tomatoes several times a day all summer long. I also had migraines especially during the summer, which would last up to three weeks and were terribly debilitating. When I stopped eating tomatoes, the migraines stopped, and are rare now (and never last longer than a day or two).

Juice makes me have symptoms of bladder infection and aching muscles, ice cream gives me terrible gas and bloating, plus brain fog.

So, all my favourite foods are definitely a terrible idea!

A few years ago In November/December i got to where nothing I ate Stayed where it should so I just ate pretzels(not gluten-free). In Jan. I had my capsule endoscopy and they found what they called AVM"s of the small intestine. I now believe it was the fact I soon after found out I had celiac and the pratzels helped contribute to me being so sick.

Sorry for the typos.

I know that I craved potatoes all the time, and am intolerant to them. After a while, I stopped wanting them. (Thank goodness for sweet potatoes, of the marigold family -- they make good fries!)

We are all different, and since being gluten free, I have not craved bread or gluteny things. I have never really been a bread person, but I did eat it, as that is what everybody ate.

What I missed the most was being able to just grab anything off the shelf without thinking. But I hve got over that, and it is not a problem now.

Thought I would crave what I couldn't eat as I am an ex smoker and thought I had an addictive personality.

I really like the diet now, plenty of fruit, veges and meat, with rice and allowable grains. It agrees with me, I never feel starved anymore, and have managed to put on no weight since, which is encouraging, as I would like to loose another two stone at least.

Cathy.

Me too - never could get enough potatoes. Worried if I went out of the country, they might not have any. Late night snacks I craved was popcorn or Tostitos. The healing diet I am on says no nightplants, corn, etc. I really miss popcorn. Never was a bread fan. One bite of rye and instant headache. LindaLee

My evil craving was macaroni and cheese. I ate it almost every day. The last time I did it made me have a panic attack and a migraine that lasted almost 5 days! I still miss it, though.

I used to crave anything that was breaded. I know longer really crave it, but I sure would like to go to PF Changs and order every gluten filled appetiser that they make. I love the lettuce wraps, but would rather order those appetisers

I swear, I kept KRAFT in business when I was a kid. As an adult I switched over to Annies - but I just craved and craved and craved. Quitting diary put an end to that. Boo hoo. What is it about mac & cheese anyway.

Hi there @Pamp8  yes I've had dermatitis herpetiformis and a negative test for celiac and a negative biopsy. I had stopped eating gluten before taking the test.  I have had an inconclusive genetic (?) test.  I developed the same all body rash.  It was one of the worst experiences of my life and I am sorry you're experiencing it.  What helped me: 1). I stopped eating oats of any kind. 2). I also took some anti-biotics that were not prescribed for dermatitis herpetiformis but I read they could help. 3). Salty food exacerbates it for me.  Now I have a small flare up any time I get cross contamination like from french fries or a shared grill at a restaurant but it's not as bad as it used to be.  Wishing you...

Welcome to the forum, @Pamp8! As to your first question, it is possible to have only the epidermal form of celiac disease but it is not common. Most people who have dermatitis herpetiformis also have damage being done to the villous lining of the small bowel.  As to your second question, most likely you are getting some gluten contamination from an unknown source on occasion that you are unaware of and are not suspecting. It could be something like in a medication or supplement you are taking or an oral hygiene product you are using or a spice you are using in your cooking. You might also look into a low iodine diet as iodine is known to exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. As to...

I'm new here, although in the past I know I've read some of the messages.   My doctor and I have long suspected that I have celiac. I have several other autoimmune illnesses. But, my celiac biopsy was negative, so I started eating a lot more gluten.  Over the last several years, I've had minor bouts of an extremely itchy rash that I was correlating to gluten, but it wasn't very bad and would improve in a short amount of time. Last year, I had a bout that was a bit worse, but it went away rather quickly, so I didn't think too much about it. Fast forward to this year. I have had a REALLY BAD case of it, for a few months, so I went to a dermatologist, and she diagnosed dermatitis herpetiformis...

P.S. I also suffer from Meniere's and Hashimoto's thyroid disease, osteopenia since 40 y.o. These all were diagnosed before the Celiac Disease! And I believe it is all interconnected.

Hi Mags, I was diagnosed almost 4 years ago at 57y.o, also of Irish heritage, my mom's from Co. Galway. Have your doctors run an immune globulin panel. My IgA was undetectable & that is what the usual bloodwork for celiac relies on. For example, my tTG IgA was below 2 & deamidated Gliadin IgA was 5, both in normal range. In other words, you do not have celiac. I HAD TO ASK THE DOCTOR TO RETEST ME  using IgG versions of both tests! When he did tTG IgG = >100 ( range 0-5) & the deamidated gliadin IgG = 219 (range 0-19).  I also had 2 copies of the gene on 23&me. It is sad that you have to tell the doctors what to test for, but you have to do your research & be your own advocate...
