Ataxia

I'm wondering what other people's experience with ataxia has been because I've never found anyone else who has it. I am improving in some wonderful ways gluten free, but as of yet my ataxia has not improved. Of course, I would expect it to take much longer.

I'd like to know how this symptom is for others and how long it took to improve after you went gluten-free.

Thanks!

Melodi

I got the impression from my doctor that where I am at now is where I am going to stay - UNLESS I would go back on gluten and then it will get much worse. To be honest, I am so tired of all the auto-immune diseases that I have been diagnosed with, that I really only half listen. I no longer search out information on them or anything. It seems for me, that that is the only way I can handle them. I really should listen more when they tell me about them, but I just don't want to hear anymore.

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
