Calling all Saskatchewan celiacs,

I just learned today that there is a restauraunt in Regina called "The Creek in Cathedral Bistro". It is a small but pricey little bistro type place. (13th Ave)

Apparently if you tell them you are a Celiac, you get your own special menu :D:D:D

I have not been there, and am looking forward to my first visit.

Also, I have heard that the italian place called "Poverino's" which is on Victoria Ave East will make most of their pasta dishes with brown rice pasta if you ask them too. :D:D

Anyone been to these places?

Thanks for the info. I'm going to be in Regina in October to see the Stones and I might try out those places.

I've gone to Poverino's! If you go on Monday or Tuesday its even cheaper. You only have to pay $1 extra for the rice noodles (i found out they are Tinkyada penne). But you get a HUGE plate full! Its very filling. Are you a member of the CCA? I got a list from my Regina chapter last year of all the restaurants in Regina that have something gluten-free. If you want I can find it and type them up!

I've also gone to Poverino's! I just moved from Winnipeg to Regina for school and I have found Regina to be extremely Celiac friendly overall! It's great! All of us SK Celiacs should get together for meal sometime! Maybe we can convince Poverino's to add gluten-free beer to their menu! :D

Hey, I can dream, right?

Tony Roma's on South Albert was also great at accommodating me. I love Old Fashion Foods on Albert, and I believe the gluten-free cake my bf ordered came from J&R's (????) bakery. It was excellent and I did not get sick!

Cheers to fellow Sask. people!

To top it all off, I just found out the Pasta Prima on Albert also has gluten free noodles upon reuqest.

Go Queen's city! :D

I wonder if they have gluten-free food at Taylor Field? That was my other issue aside from which team to cheer for for the Labour Day Classic...a bit of a conundrum if you will...hehe

I think maybe I'll wear a Riders hat and Bombers jersey...wait that'll just get me beat up by BOTH sides! LOL!

P.S. The McDonald's by the U of R has also been really good with my "NO BUN!" Big X-tra requests.

Honestly, I think Regina is one of the best places to live in Canada if you are a Celiac. So far, so good.

My girlfriend was at Poverinos this week for a work function and saw the rice noodles option. She brought me home a to -go meal and it was great. I also agree that Tony Roma's is very accomadating. Other independant resataurant' that have goen the etra mile for me are The Chimney, Skara and the Willow. The chimney makes a special french onion soup for me without the bread.

Old Fashioned Foods on South Albert is probably the best one in the city-the staff is super-helpful.

I have just joined the Regina Chapter and missed the fall meeting hopefully I will see many of you there next time.

P.S. The only gluten free option I know of at Taylor Field is the Rum and Coke! Haha!

P.s: At Taylor Field I have eaten the hotdogs (but its been a couple years since i was there)--the lady found me a label with ingredients listed and charged me less for it!

I was so excited to find this topic today!! I was diagnosed with celiac disease in november 2003, but am new to this message board. I had seen it before but never signed up.. and I am glad I have! I had no idea that western pizza served gluten free pizza! I used to go to a place called "passionate pizza/sensuous sushi" but it was only open for a few months after I was diagnosed and then shut down. I also did not know that kelsey's restuarant had anything. I usually eat out at luiggi's, tony romas and montanas. I am getting a little bit tired of these places though so it would be great to try something new! also, mcdonalds is great for their fries!! Thanks so much for posting your list Lisa! I look forward to sharing more information with fellow Regina people!

Just to keep the thread alive, ZEST is now serving gluten free menu items. I believe it is near the science centre in Regina, but am not to sure. I had a look at the online menu and it has notyet been updated, but in the article I read, they are going to be having everything from appetizers to desserts available. Way to go Regina!

num1habsfan Rising Star

I should also add that I finally ate at Luigi's a while back...the only reason I went in that direction was because I had them allergy tests just across the road. Obviously I only tried 1 meal  but its SO cool that you get your own menu and theres soooooooo many choices. I had a chicken alfredo or somethin like that, best stuff I EVER tasted.

if you ever feel like driving basically out of the city and have never been to Luigi's yet, I suggest you make a purpose of it sometime ;)

Prairie Girl Apprentice

I emailed Zest to get the scoop on the Gluten free meals and got a response today. I will paste it into this post.

I checked out the website and there are a lot of interesting things! Some sound a little strange for my typical tastes, but I am sure they would be very good. I like that the chef worked with Shelly Case on the menu as well! I feel quite confident about eating here :)

Hi Courtney,

Executive chef Rob fuller has worked closely with Shelley Case,PHD who represents celiac association around the world, to create a celiac/low gluten friendly menu. We have several items on our evening menu and a few choices on our lunch menu. Our evening menu can be viewed on our website and celiac friendly foods are notated with an asterisk. The lunch menu still needs to be updated and that should happen in the next week. The website is www.zestrestaurant.ca. All products are stored separately and we do are best to insure that there will be no cross mixing of products.

Thank you for your intrest and we look forward to your visits to our restaurant.

Also, I just noticed the post about "The Creek in Cathedral Bistro". I have eaten there once about 6 months ago and it was really good! I actually had forgotten about it. I went for lunch and I did get a separate menu that had stars by the things that were gluten free. I felt good after the meal so that is always a good sign! I think I had pork tenderloin and a salad and potatoes of some description. I would recommend checking it out!

Prairie Girl Apprentice

Vince from Zest just emailed me again to let me know about an article in the paper (todays). I don't get Leaderpost, but I am getting it from a friend. She said it is a long article.. I thought someone might be interested!

Hi Courtney,

extra info for you on page A 8 of Saturdays leaderpost, they ran an article on Rob and Shelleys work.

Thank you,

Just thught you would all like to know that the Mongoli Grill has gluten-free options as well. When we asked the server, she presented a sheet containing the selections that were NOT celiac friendly. I was VERY impressed. Not to mention the food was awesome.

I ate at ZEST restuarant last night and it was DELICIOUS!! We had an appetizer that was like a bean/chili sauce on top of cucumbers and it had so much flavour! Then I ordered a halibit dish that had a caramel sauce and was on wild rice.. it was really good! i also tasted the chicken dinner.. it was stuffed with a rice and walnut filling and was on sweet potatoes mixed with regular mashed potatoes and it was really really good! if i were to order again, i would get either thing.. but probably preferred the chicken dish. I noticed that there were no stars beside any dessert items and asked about them and she said they didn't have any gluten free choices at this time. the menu changes, so even the main dishes may not be the same the next time you go. and they do have gluten free desserts sometimes. i would recommend this restuarant for sure!

Did anyone else hear that M & M Meats has a list of gluten free meals?

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link... Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

@pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too. Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test to look for thiamine deficiency.  Correction of thiamine deficiency can help restore that fat pad.   Best wishes for your recovery!   Interesting Reading: Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome in a 6-Year-Old Girl with Final Diagnosis of Celiac Disease https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31089433/#:~:text=Affiliations,tissue and results in SMAS.
    • trents
Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
