Can Being Glutened Cause A Rash?

I was diagnosed with celiac disease about 2 months ago. I've been on a gluten-free diet for the last 3 weeks. This weekend I've come out in a rash over my hands, arms, neck and scalp. I'm wondering if this may be the result of being glutened. It fits the description of Dermatitis Herpetiformis very well.

I was one of the "lucky" ones that didn't have any symptoms prior to my diagnosis apart from anemia, so I don't know what to expect when I do get glutened.

Yes, getting a rash when glutened is quite common, it sure happens to me.

Most definitely. I get hives when wheat touches my body, like in shampoo or something. Many of us get rashes from being glutened too, it's very normal. Deb

YES YES YES YES YES

that was one of my first symptoms as a child, rashes all the time, when I went gluten-free, the rash over my entire face and upper body dissappeared. Anytime wheat touches my daughter's skin she breaks out in hives...

Yea this is most likely from gluten. Be sure to check out the DH section of the board and also watch out for iodine.

I get a rash, too.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll just have to put up with it until it's gone. Hopefully it will disappear of its own accord over the next day or two.

I think I have PF Chang's to thank for getting glutened even though I ordered off the gluten-free menu.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
