I am going to Disney World in Orlando in FEb. I know there is an Outback Steakhouse. Are there other restaurants that anyone could recomend? Also are there any Whole foods or other health food stores in the area? Thank for you help!!

Hello! The only Whole Foods Market around here is on Aloma Ave. in Winter Park... It's just north of downtown Orlando. It's the Fairbanks exit off of I-4. Fairbanks turns into Aloma. As far as restaurants, Disney is so caring and accomodating!! The chef will come out and talk to you at the restaurants and in Epcot I go to the mexican place and get the ensalada mexicana i think its called. Yummy!! I got a annual pass just for the food!!! Outside of Disney, you can try Carrabbas Italian Grill, The Bonefish Grill, Chilis, Mimis Cafe, First Watch, Buca De Beppo, Don Pablos, The Bee Line Diner, Chevy's Fresh Mex, Flemings Steakhouse (Winter Park), P.F. Changs, Roy's, Ruth's Chris, Shulas Steakhouse. I've been to all of these except Chevy's Fresh Mex. They all have great food and a great, understanding staff. I hope you enjoy your trip to Disney and my neck off the woods!!

I talked with a woman at my local celiac meeting last week, and she said Disneyland in CA was very accomodating. They printed out a list of all the restaurants in the park that had gluten free items, and even a menu of those items. It is my hope that Disneyworld would do the same, as we're planning a trip there soon. I remember they had a lot of food in the part of the park where all the different countries were represented- mexican, italian, etc...I bet they've got some good stuff there! Let us know what you find out :)

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
