I am a llittle confused on the whole oatmeal topic. Is it alright to eat and if so what brand? I heard that McCanns is good but are all of their products ? I grabbed the instant Maple and brown sugar flavored. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Most oats are contaminated. There is debate whether the oats themselves are a problem or not. Wheat, barley and rye actually have slightly different proteins, and oats, yet a different one. They're just not sure if oat protein is bad for us or not. At least that's my understanding from what I've read on the topic.

I have no problems with McCann's, I use their regular instant oats.

It was Trader Joes Multigrain oatmeal that landed me at urgent care 2 weeks ago after ALMOST being back to par on rice and potatos...I am new and 8 years ago, looked into Celiac after what they called IBS and poo pooed my thoughts on possibly being Celiac. I have not touched (knowingly) any obvious oats, brans, breads, etc for the past 2 weeks and feel like every day I am coming back from the dead more and more. This is wild!! I do not hold out much hope that the 7 vials of blood they took will show anything as from what I see here it is tricky to detect..but I know that the day I ate that oatmeal, I felt as if I had been poisoned.

Rye, Barley, Oats, and Wheat. :blink: I am a bit embarrassed to even type those 4 words.. been learning a lot here in the past couple of days. Like... DUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Yes..true. That "contamination" word though is enough to keep me clear of any grain that swells up in water other than brown rice for right now. ;)

these oats are supposed to be good we bought them and have had no problem with them (i dont know how to do a link so youll just have to look up this sight the old fashioned was lol) but this sight explains them and the proccess they use and everything like that its really worth lookin up

I highly reccomend talking to your doctor and doing research before trying oats. Then I would only eat the gluten-free oats from either the Canadaian (cream hill estate?) or Wyoming (glutenfreeoats.com) people. I eat the gluten-free oats from Wyoming and have not had a problem.

our ped gi says that uncontaminated oats are ok. he was in on a study done on oats some years back in denver.

Some celiacs react to even uncontaminated oats. The protein in oats called avenin causes reactions in people because it similar to the protein in wheat, rye, and barley. I stay away from all oats because I do not trust them. It's a big risk so I would rather stay with the definite safe stuff.

Speaking of this, there's a new option for those of us that like oats--Trader Joe's now has certified gluten free oats! I am chowing down on these for breakfast! I am happy to see McCann's is on here, as I was going to be sad that I couldn't have irish oats anymore. :(

The info on products on this thread (except your post) is 5 years old. You cannot assume it is still correct. You should check McCann's for yourself as products change over the years.

      I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

      I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

      It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.

      Hi Colleen H,   I suffered with the pins and needles/burning feeling in my legs and feet for at least  6 years until my Nephrologist figured out that I had to go on a low salt diet.  He said my kidneys weren't strong enough to remove the salt.  The simple fix was a diuretic, but that med leaves the uric acid behind, so that wasn't an option.  On the bright side the low salt diet lowered my BP over 20 points and and the pins and needles/burning feeling went away.  Good Luck and hope this helps.
