OK...positive blood work, high related inflammation levels (c3c, c4c, and crp)

I have:

Joint pain

gas pains (some times even on an empty stomach)

the big D from time to time

constipation from time to time

weightloss (I was 318 5 mos ago, I am now 253, which isn't bad because of the weight, but to me its bad because of how I am lsoing it)

Salt bothers me (not already in food, but like if its sprinkled on top...WHY????)

I have to have meats with no antibiotics, or preservatives (very expesnive, but I get sick otherwise)

I get pains all over my body, even muscle twitches

Dizziness

Nausea

I run fevers from time to time

I get dehydrated, really easily, I mean really easily

I have DH on my face, although the rheumatologist wants be to get biopsied on the skin in a couple of plcaes because he said it could also be discoid lupus???

Most of the time I am falling on my face with exhaustion,

Then there are times that I can't get to sleep at all (what that heck is that?)

So...to make a long story short....my gp was a really winner when I went the other day. he said and I quote: "You went to a rheumatologist (my thought while he was talking: yeah winner because you weren't doing anything, he took the time and found something) I think you have a whole lotta nothing going on"

So I called the medical group, the head doc said it was insensitive and he concurs with the ER doc from last week. I owe it to myself to get the discoid checked out by a derm, but...and he said a big but....Celiac can really tear your system apart, and with as scary as it may be,,,all the thinsg you just told me, Sprue can cause?

Really, I was gluten free since June doing fairly well. Then my new GI doc had me start a challange, which is what landed me in the ER, 2 weeks ago. and I am still sick from it??

I hate to whine the same story thats been lamented about on here....but is Sprue really that wicked that it can do all that???? Wow.

This insidious disease can do all that and much more....... :(<_<

I had many of those symptoms, especially the dehydration, which even caused trips to the ER several times over the past 20 years.

Most importantly, you need to be sure you're 100% gluten-free.

After that, you sound very much like me. Dead tired, but when I go to bed, I can't fall asleep, included! Being gluten-free for me was not quite enough to turn my health around. I was just sick for too long and it wore my whole system down. I think it does all go back to my problem with gluten, but in the end it wore me out. I just read a book called Tired of Being Tired by Jesse Lynn Hanely MD. I highly recommend it to you.

I know the feeling of absolute total exhaustion very well. I still get it. It particularly scared me one day when I was taking the kids to visit my mom in the city and I literally felt like I was going to fall asleep at the wheel on the highway......

Oh yeah,it's a really insidious disease alright.

Nasty, nasty disease which creeps up,and has a myriad of symptoms.

Regarding the fatigue, before dx ,my hubby would be in bed 20 out of 24 hrs a day.

He was so weak I'd have to support his head to take a drink :o

Nobody here WANTS to stay sick....and EVERYONE here does every last thing imaginable short of getting a new immune system to stay helathy. You have no right, no background and no place saying things like this.

This HEALER is a dog and pony show, nothing more that the admission to get in to where he's set up shop and peddle his ridiculous garbage.

Google him, and several radio programs in his native country.

Stop advertising for some dog and pony magic show. PLEASE.

Narrow minded? You have no clue.

What I don't buy into, is a dog and pony show that is capitalizing on a disease that is just now coming to the forefront of the medical community and gaining attention and capitalizing on people's misfourtunes.

It's low.

Now go away, we don't want you here.

If you really wanted to just help people by giving the information, you wouldn't have pasted the same story in almost every section and in the middle of other topics. THIS is what WE especially don't want.

I just read on the scd info board about a salt issue - you say you are having problems with that--

"salted nuts have starch on them. Salt can have DEXTROSE put into it. Most salt w/ iodine in it has dextrose in it. So this can be a problem. Dextrose is illegal on the scd diet." They recommend getting the iodine from vitamins and use sea salt. I have been using Himalayan Salt.

For me, the sleep issue got better the longer I was gluten free. Hope you feel and get better.

Just a gluten free diet is not enough.  Now you have to identify and replenish your malnutrition.  Celiac disease is co-morbid with malabsorption syndrome.  Low vitamin D, Low Thiamine caused Gastointeston Beriberi, low choline, low iodine are common the general population, and in newly diagnosed Celiacs in the western culture its is more likely.  It takes time to heal and you need to focus on vitamins and minerals.  Gluten free foods are not fortified like regular processed foods.

Dear Kitty Since March I have been following your recommendations regarding vitamins to assist with various issues that I have been experiencing.  To recap, I am aged 68 and was late diagnosed with Celiac about 12 years ago.  I had been experiencing terrible early morning headaches which I had self diagnosed as hypoglycaemia.  I also mentioned that I had issues with insomnia, vertigo and brain fog.   It's now one year since I started on the Benfotiamine 600 mg/day.  I am still experiencing the hypoglycaemia and it's not really possible to say for sure whether the Benfotiamine is helpful.  In March this year, I added B-Complex Thiamine Hydrochloride and Magnesium L-Threonate on a daily basis, and I am now confident to report that the insomnia and vertigo and brain fog have all improved!!  So, very many thanks for your very helpful advice. I am now less confident that the early morning headaches are caused by hypoglycaemia, as even foods with a zero a GI rating (cheese, nuts, etc) can cause really server headaches, which sometimes require migraine medication in order to get rid off.  If you are able to suggest any other treatment I would definitely give it a try, as these headaches are a terrible burden.  Doctors in the UK have very limited knowledge concerning dietary issues, and I do not know how to get reliable advice from them. Best regards,

@rei.b,  I understand how frustrating starting a new way of eating can be.  I tried all sorts of gluten-free processed foods and just kept feeling worse.  My health didn't improve until I started the low histamine AIP diet.  It makes a big difference.   Gluten fits into opioid receptors in our bodies.  So, removing gluten can cause withdrawal symptoms and reveals the underlying discomfort.  SIBO can cause digestive symptoms.  SIBO can prevent vitamins from being absorbed by the intestines.  Thiamine insufficiency causes Gastrointestinal Beriberi (bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or constipation).  Thiamine is the B vitamin that runs out first because it can only be stored for two weeks.  We need more thiamine when we're sick or under emotional stress.  Gastric Beriberi is under recognised by doctors.  An Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test is more accurate than a blood test for thiamine deficiency, but the best way to see if you're low in thiamine is to take it and look for health improvement.  Don't take Thiamine Mononitrate because the body can't utilize it well.  Try Benfotiamine.  Thiamine is water soluble, nontoxic and safe even at high doses.  I thought it was crazy, too, but simple vitamins and minerals are important.  The eight B vitamins work together, so a B Complex, Benfotiamine,  magnesium and Vitamin D really helped get my body to start healing, along with the AIP diet.  Once you heal, you add foods back in, so the AIP diet is worth doing for a few months. I do hope you'll consider the AIP diet and Benfotiamine.

Imemsm, Most of us have experienced discontinued, not currently available or products that suddenly become seasonal.   My biggest fear about relocating from Maryland to Florida 5 years ago, was being able to find gluten-free foods that fit my restricted diet.  I soon found out that the Win Dixie and Publix supper markets actually has 99% of their gluten-free foods tagged, next to the price.  The gluten-free tags opened up a  lot of foods that aren't actually marked gluten-free by the manufacture.  Now I only need to check for my other dietary restrictions.  Where my son lives in New Hartford, New York there's a Hannaford Supermarket that also has a gluten-free tag next to the price tag.  Hopefully you can locate a Supermarket within a reasonable travel distance that you can learn what foods to check out at a Supermarket close to you.  I have dermatitis herpetiformis too and I'm very sensitive to gluten and the three stores I named were very gluten-free friendly.  Good Luck

Okay well the info about TTG-A actually makes a lot of sense and I wish the PA had explained that to me. But yes, I would assume I would have intestinal damage from eating a lot of gluten for 32 years while having all these symptoms. As far as avoiding gluten foods - I was definitely not doing that. Bread, pasta, quesadillas (with flour tortillas) and crackers are my 4 favorite foods and I ate at least one of those things multiple times a day e.g. breakfast with eggs and toast, a cheese quesadilla for lunch, and pasta for dinner, and crackers and cheese as a before bed snack. I'm not even kidding.  I'm not really big on sugar, so I don't really do sweets. I don't have any of those conditions.  I am not sure if I have the genes or not. When the geneticist did my genetic testing for EDS this year, I didn't think to ask for him to request the celiac genes so they didn't test for them, unfortunately.  I guess another expectation I had is  that if gluten was the issue, the gluten-free diet would make me feel better, and I'm 3 months in and that hasn't been the case. I am being very careful and reading every label because I didn't want to screw this up and have to do gluten-free for longer than necessary if I end up not having celiac. I'm literally checking everything, even tea and anything else prepacked like caramel dip. Honestly its making me anxious 😅
