Hi Stinker. Good to meet you :) Have we seen you somewhere before? ;)

Stinker! (Thanks Susie)

Yes, I do believe we've met

You'll be nice company for Angus--but how do you manage to type

DingoGirl Enthusiast

ohhhhhhhhhh dear, has Stinker been on the computer? :o I just knew they were up to more than eating my bags of chips and Nuggets when I was gone......ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

Hello Susie from England, I dont' know if you've MET Stinker but you've certainly heard about her enough.....:) Such naughty dingos!!

Well, I am taking the girls for a play date with their puppy boyfriends (we will not tell their other boyfriends of this new situation).....wish Angus could come.

Nikkie - - what in the heck IS mincemeat, anyway? When I was little I thought it was the gross part of the chicken - those gizzards and stuff.

Carry on, sillies, adn we will see you later!

LOL!! :lol::lol:

...err this is another one of those cupboard moments !!

A cultural difference between us peeps.

Sweet mincemeat is dried fruit ( raisins, apples, sultanas ) orange peel, spices, alcohol plus suet.

Wrapped in pastry, served with cream.

There is no meat in sweet mincemeat

..as opposed to minced beef or lamb.

I've no idea why it's called 'mincemeat' (probably some ye olde English tradition that got changed along the way)

Covsooze (Susie) will know what I'm on about !

BTW Susan, gross part of chicken - do you mean giblets???

nikki-uk Enthusiast

Bev, - I'm not sure you'll be interested now we've established that oddly (sweet) English mince pies have no meat in them !!

..but Beef Wellington is divine :P (and there are NO wellington boots in it!!)

Actually Nikki, I would also love your mincemeat pie recipe. Do you make your own from stratch? I used to make a pie from bottled mincemeat and my own crust--but I have been forgetting to call the two brands I can get here and see if it's gluten-free or not.

My husband would love a mince pie at Christmas--he's not gluten-free of course, but that's the only way I'm gonna make it :D

I just got finished making 2 big batches of sugar cookies--and frosting and decorating.

PATTI !! NO I DIDN'T MAKE THE MINCEMEAT FROM SCRATCH !!! :o ( Good lord NO!!) :lol::lol:

Okay , I don't know if you can get jars of mincemeat over there but just so there's no misunderstanding it looks something likeOpen Original Shared Link

Now I also know that you guys use different measurements an' all ( you use cups I think? ) but this is how I made mine....

200grams (8oz) Gluten Free Flour

50grams (2oz) hard margarine

50grams (2oz) lard

1 Orange,grated rind and juice

1 medium egg, beaten

Mincemeat

Place the flour in a bowl and rub the fats to resemble course breadcrumbs. Stir in orange rind, beaten egg and sufficient orange juice to form a soft dough.

Knead well on a surface lightly dusted with flour, then roll out 2/3 and cut out rounds to line tartlet tins. Place a spoonful of mincemeat in each. Roll out remainder of pastry and cutr out desired shapes e.g stars for top of pies. Brush with beaten egg and bake in a pre heated oven for 15-20 mins until golden brown. Serve warm dusted with icing sugar.

Oven temperature 190 celsius/375 farenheit/gas mark 5

Not at all sure that can translate in anything you understand (I think our oven temps are different too )

but there it is :)

Do you dare??? :lol::lol:

Tomorrow, Sausage Roll recipes !!! (what are they? you are all thinking)

Nikki,

Thanks for posting your mince pie recipe. I wish I could get the brand of mincemeat that you have--it's marked gluten-free, etc. right on the front! I will just have to call on the ones available to me.

I loved your crust recipe using the orange! I am definately trying that--it looks so good, and I've never seen anything like that. You are a very clever cook :D

What a thread--mojos being lost and found, pets coming out of their avatars and speaking up (by the way, I wonder how my kitty would hold up with all the dogs... ) and cooking tips! Kind of a one-stop wonder thread  What's Richard going to think when he gets back?? :o

PATTI !!! - I can safely say I've never been accused of being a clever cook before.

I only read it out of a gluten-free xmas cookbook.

Hee hee!!

I told my cat (Lady Lucy) that I have a new friend *Stinker* - she is not amused, she says I have betrayed her and is now sitting with her back to me

My cat is a snob and treats me with the disgust she thinks I deserve <_<

The heck with pink--Angus is the new black :P

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Angus is the new black. And with good reason (besides the fact that he rocks!). He's still in mourning. :( Talked to his foster mom down in Tennessee. She said he was born to a man who had 10 dogs, none of them fixed. If he couldn't get someone to take Angus' litter (10 OF THEM!), he was going to shoot them. WTF?    So he was this mean jerk for 8 weeks so God only knows what happened then and the his foster mom took him.

She had him for four weeks before he spent his FIRST time in a crate which was a 20 hour drive seperated from all but 2 of his siblings. Poor baby has been through a lot! No one he HATES the crate!

He's doing REALLY well but he's shy. LOVES other dogs, a little hesitant around people (except me cuz he knows I'm his momma :D ) when he goes for a walk, he struts his stuff like he's in a dog show. We love love love him!

Patti- Angus LOVES kitties! He's so fascinated by our 2, doesn't chase them, just gets in play puppy pose and wiggles his butt. :D

Nikki- I am DEFINITELY going to try about the mincemeat pie. It sounds YUMMY!

Donna- That is ONE GOOD LOOKING MOJO you got there!

Do you think if all the dogs and cats on this thread get together and bark/meow richard would hear it?

Last month I got blood tests done. My iron level was at 205 ug/dL and 141 ug/dL iron binding capacity unsaturated, 346 ug/dl total iron binding capacity, 59 transferrin % saturation. My ferritin level was at 13 so I got tested for celiac disease last week. My tTG-IgA is <.05, DGP IgA is 4.9 and ferritin level is 9. My doctor didn't order other celiac disease tests. In 2021 I was dealing with severe constipation and hemorrhoids. I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I still deal with hemorrhoids but only about once a week. Also, I've been dealing with very pale skin for at least 5 years. Do you think I have celiac disease?

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link... Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

@pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too. Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test to look for thiamine deficiency.  Correction of thiamine deficiency can help restore that fat pad.   Best wishes for your recovery!   Interesting Reading: Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome in a 6-Year-Old Girl with Final Diagnosis of Celiac Disease https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31089433/#:~:text=Affiliations,tissue and results in SMAS.
