Well, today is my birthday, so as the resident groundhog I am here to say that there will be no more winter! Snow and cold are right out.

I am 37. I am thrilled that I get to finally relive that scene from Monty Python in my personal life.

Well, speaking of Oracle Peter, DS came up to me this morning and asked me something quite thought-provoking, and I immediately looked blank and said, "Okay. This is one for the Oracle": How come in very old photographs, no one is ever smiling? :huh:

Not to step on the Oracle's well-insulated toes, but since he may have hours of conducting commerce ahead, I'll say it's due to the extreme suckage of early film. :lol:

It was even mentioned in the film "Cold Mountain", by Nicole Kidman's char.

Maybe it was 5 min, maybe it was 2 (uh-oh!! :blink: we DO need Peter!!), but any change in expression could ruin the shot.

Hey, do this: next time you look at a posh interior design magazine - which I used to do ALL the time - look and see if you can find the rich people's scads of framed photos of loved ones - on a desk or bookcase, for example. You will notice that none of their peeps are LOOKING at the camera.......they are always caught in some action or pensive shot - none of this smile-for-the-camera crap. Only for commoners. :lol: :lol: :lol:

This was certainly a part of it, with slow film taking a long exposure. Faster exposures could be made with wide aperture lenses, but the optics weren't so great then so you got blurry results. Sharp, clear image ==> small aperture (high f-stop number) ==> long exposure time. Technology has improved, but the principle still applies.

Gawd, it's true...if it wasn't lacy, flowing sleeves we were reminding him to watch, it was a long, billowing beard, or these enormous gossamer wings, or an incredible Sumo-belly...we just had to be ready for anything......

I must tell you what can be found throughout my house. When you first buy a small frame, there is usually a print of a photo in it, usually an attractive young generic-looking girl or man. Well, in several of my frames I have kept these people within, and matted it nicely. People will pick up one of the pictures and say, "Oh! Lovely pic. Who is this?" and I'll shrug and say, "I dunno".

People either find this hysterically funny or plain strange. No middle ground, here. I find it a scream......

So, here I am again, after preparing and enjoying a gluten-free dinner with Jacquie.

It has been a busy two days at the store. We have hired a new team member to replace Sarah, who as you who have been reading know is going on pregnancy leave soon. Jacquie and I usually are both in on Friday. We came in for the entire day, since Sarah, who usually works performs morning duties, is away on vacation for two weeks.

Friday we did about 25% of the business we would normally see on a Friday. :(

Well, the weather was awful, so we were both there, with Helen, our trainee, with nothing to do. We have been talking since November about a major rework of the store. With the snow falling, and working around shoveling the parking area four times on Friday, we began the journey.

By the time we finished today at around 4, we had moved or completely restructured 12 4-foot sections of display space. We moved the fish section, the domestic bird department, and the grooming stuff. Dog treats got rearranged. It was a lot of work and we are both very tired tonight, but we like the new look.

Our student part-timer comes in at 11 on Sunday to open. He last saw the store an Thursday evening. He will have to re-shovel the parking lot, and then cope with a made over store as he does the daily inventory review and puts up tags for the sale that starts tomorrow. We have not given him any warning. We are evil. :ph34r:

Good Sunday morning, all!

Wow, Peter, what a busy day for you guys yesterday. I would love to see your store...we are heading to Brantford the end of the month for hockey tournament, but that's probably a bit far to be travelling between games. I'm in T.O. a couple of times through the summer, so I will stop in, for sure. :)

So, got DH's Enterolab results, and of course he has very high antibody counts. So, he will be calling in from work tomorrow morning with what we hope will be lower chart numbers. It's only been three days on the diet, but I would think that a symptom like astonishing flatulence would respond fairly quickly.

I sure did :D We had 2 Macy's gift cards from Christmas and I was waiting till this weekend when I knew the towels were going to be on sale ;) We ended up getting new towels, a plush-y rug, and a new shower curtain--all in the cream hotel-style. I'm wanting to make my bathroom more spa-like. :rolleyes: Of course, we went over the value of the cards, but between those and the sale, we didn't do too bad. B)

Of course, now I'm really itching to paint in there.....

We're 3 km south of 401 via Yonge St, so you'll pass pretty close by. But it is about 110 km more to Bradford, so you would need a really long time between games for a side trip. :lol:

Actually, funny you have mentioned these throw-out shots of people's chins and necks, or of me looking hideous, or my mom appearing to have her finger up her nose, eyes closed. DO NOT throw them out or delete. Here's what I do: I take them to Walmart or Sears (The Dollar Store I've hit, as well) and head to the frame department. There, I take the perfect hair/teeth pics out, and put mine in the frames. Yes, really. :lol:

      Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free.       Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?

      Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine. Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine. Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats. Meat, especially organ...

      Fermented foods, Kefir, Kombucha?

      I have read fermented foods like sauerkraut, pickles, Kefir, Kombucha are great for gut health besides probiotics. However I have searched and read about ones that were tested (Kefir, Kombucha) and there is no clear one that is very helpful. Has anyone take Kefir, Kombucha and noticed a difference in gut health? I read one is lactose free but when tested was high in lactose so I would probably try a non dairy one. Thanks

      Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.

      Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.

Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
