Went and planted about 40 fall iris and weeded..

AH!!....a fellow avid gardener :D

Judy!...we'll have to swap some garden pics in an email......

Talking of Iris...I have a load of 'flag iris' in my garden in a prime spot --- I wanted to put something else there but couldn't bare to throw 'em as my Mum gave them to me AND she got them from my late Grandad's garden

GADS they must be about 50 yrs old...plenty of life in 'em

So, Grandad's Iris' are now at the bottom of the garden :D

...should've been doing the evil heinous IRONING...but b@#$%$#%!!..it's too nice out B)

Oh! What a tremendous dentist I have. I have been going to him for....35 years. I called his office last night, leaving a message about my tooth and that I would be calling to get in early this morning. Well, good ol' Patti, his secretary, called me at 7:50 am and said, "Can you be here in half an hour?" You bet.

So, some drilling, some amalgam replacement.....

135 bucks.

Missed my step class, so took the dogs out for a run in the rain. Yes, it is now pouring here, and we had roofers beginning to replace our shingles at 7 am. They got the front done, then had to stop and pack up.

Soooooooooo....the job is half-done. I do hope to see them bright and early tomorrow.

And I asked - - they do NOT have ballcocks. Perhaps other roofers do, but not any of these guys. <_<

Candied lamb cartilege.................should have told my dentist that this was what caused that piece coming off my tooth - - had an Elton cone last evening, and there were some surprise bits that required some real gnawing........

Emily, I tuned in to the Rogers Cup and saw:

DANCEVIC -vs- DJOKOVIC

I think the canuck lost.

Yep, he lost. :(

Ptaoughmghmn wontdroolforgruel! :lol::lol:

Shoulda checked me email first!

Hey! I wanna see some tattooed grandmas!!

...should've been doing the evil heinous IRONING...but b@#$%$#%!!..it's too nice out B)

Nickerler!! What have we discussed about this ridiculous, heinous, waste-of-precious-energy chore?! Wear yer stuff wrinkled! It is so much more interesting to look at, a wrinkled piece of fabric........well, all right, it's much more interesting to draw.........more light and shadow, line and sweep.....

Same wif skin, but I certainly do NOT try to wrinkle mine up for interest's sake.....

Have a great swim, Judy!

Amanda's struggling through work......thinking about you. Get this slippery elm gruel on the stove!

My whole Esophogus problems stemmed from the ravaging bronch. infection. I never had gerd issues beforew at all....The Z-pac will calm it down. Scary huh?

I see the lozenges are gluten-free too! I just like the gruel because it's like sipping hot tea.

Love yer avatar, gorgeous ladies!! Glad you are feeling a little better today :)

Julie? :o Gruel???? :wontdroolforgruelface:

 Tom

I kid you not, that's what it be called!

Candied Lamb Cartilage  That sounds really appetizing......

After the 24hr shutdown (operation Investigate Silly Phorum) I was FURTHER plunged into a phorumless abyss due to loss of internet connection!!!!!!!! :(

MY Gaaaawd ....as if I haven't suffered enough already!!!!

BTW .....Bev's right....I also got gas with the shakes  ........Tel was going to escort me to an internet cafe......

:o The horror! I would go nutso for sure!

The technician told me that she didn't see anything that would cause the enzymes to be elevated--no stones, liver looked clear. I still haven't heard the official word from the doctor though <_< Liver disease can cause the enzymes to be high, but they can also be elevated without disease.

I still wonder if the daily gluten cross contamination from the nuts could have caused them to be out of whack because one of the readings was elevated before I went gluten-free and it went back to normal after being on the diet for a few months. (probably wishful thinking...)

I just read that your Edna is working beautifully!! That's great, Julie! :D

I'm dealing with elevated liver enzymes too Patti <_< They are a pain in the behind!

I'm glad they didn't find anything to be alarmed about. I'm thinking they will just wait and retest in a few months??

Yes, my Edna is going well!! You were quite the inspiration when I was getting started :)

Well woke up the a beauuuuuuuuuuuuutifullllllllllllllllll cool sunny morning.

I need to borrow Judy too--maybe she can do a gardening tour..... :D Try as I might, I just don't have a knack for gardening and I love flowers.

Omg! My MIL just passed on a tantalizing bit of info... One of her coworkers is Celiac, so we often trade tips and stuff. APPARENTLY there is a new Italian restaurant in Winston Salem that has a gluten-free menu- including rice pasta! :o Must get more info... all my MIL could remember is what road it's on- and there are literally probably a hundred little restaurants on that road.

This would be awesome (I can't truly believe it till I check it out) as all we have had before is an Outback (not even open for lunch) in Winston, and a PF Changs in Greensboro. We haven't even been to those two... they're kind of on the high end for our "typical" eating-out budget. Well... Brian and I used to go to Outback before we had kids. :P

I have no idea if this new place is high end or not... will report back when I check it out.

Heh... If a plant dies on me, I label it "one of those hard to grow types," and I try something else. :P So I have a jillion different irises and day lilies- they thrive so well here, they're actually very hard to kill if you want to get rid of them. Same thing with my gladiolas. For annuals, I love petunias... so satisfying, colorful, and they get huge over a summer. I actually had some come back this year from the ones I planted last year.

Although speaking of plants not acting right <_< I don't know what's going on with the dianthus I planted last year. They flowered gorgeously last year. This year, all the green growth is near the bottom, and everything at the top looks dead... and very few blooms. I guess I need to cut it back..?

I keep trying to get some pretty ground cover started in a few areas, and I'm having a hard time with that. My dirt is appalling. Hard, dry red clay, full of rocks. <_<

OK, I realize about half of you are gonna slap me for this whine, but...

This stupid frickin' Edna.

When I went gluten-free I lost a bunch of weight and had to get new clothes. Then, 6 week vacation, more weight, again new clothes. Now this stupid no-tasty-foods Edna - even my smallest pants are loose.

I know, I know, some part of me is happy that I'm healthier and all that crap, but this continual shopping thing just sucks.

Ok, thanks for letting me get that off my chest (I gotta get new bras for crimini's sake! Do you know how expensive those things are?!)

Back to work all.

You may lose weight after your surgery, too. I lost 10 lbs in the first 6 weeks after and kept it off for quite a while....of course I eventually found it again.... <_<:PB)

I sort of assumed that. Most pain pills don't encourage eating.

I suppose on the upside I can force my friends to have another girls shopping trip. That was quite a bit of fun.

Not very often, but our winters are so mild, that sometimes they do. I have one single teeny little purple petunia growing bravely out front... but a bunch of them came back in one of my window boxes on the back deck! I was amazed. I had put four colors in that box last summer, and all four came back this year. This particular window box is one of those that has the water-it-from-the-bottom wells underneath. I think that's what did it. Every time it rained, it caught the water and kept the soil damp during the dry spells.

I've never got on with these (of course we've got completely different climes  )..but mine ended up looking 'messy'

Yeah, my dianthus look very messy right now. <_< And there's not even any blooms to make up for it.

Composted manure is the best!!! I use it in my beds, too... horses everywhere around here. (<giggle> That does sound funny.) Rehabililtating the soil in the bare areas on our land would be a huge job... sigh. I keep thinking if I can just get SOMETHING to grow in these wasteland areas, anything at all, that would help prevent erosion, which would be a step in the right direction.

I've also considered borrowing some horses and just letting them poop all over those areas. That would have to do something eventually!

Ooh--I love all this garden talk (furiously taking notes here  )

I have a couple plants that I stick with--the ones I can't kill. ;) I'm in the process of putting in a perinneal garden--trying to anyway.....any thoughts on varieties that grow well in full sun?

I was considering a muumuu and a wide brimmed hat for such purposes, but was thrust back to reality to me jeans and t-shirts B)

But do all of you guys buy organic? I still buy reg. foods.....just wondering once I hear your answers I will tell you why I asked...

I will choose organic whenever possible but I don't go out of my way.

Why would I get mad at you for asking that?

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.

Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.
    • lizzie42
Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
