See, we have a modest bungalow, and a huge deck and yard that will not be too inviting as it will be -10 and snowdrift-covered.

Minus 10???....Is that with wind chill??

Pop a cardigan on, you'll be fine - maybe see how many people you can fit in a hotub?

OMG.. . . ...I am planning a BIG surprise birthday party for my sister here at our place next week. It's a work night, after dinner, so sweet nibblies, fruit and cheese trays, wine and beer, coffee, and a big cake.

Sent out my invites last week, and so far we're looking at 20 yeses. I have not heard from her large group of friends - - will be another 10, at least. Then I got an email from her work saying that ALL FORTY-FIVE staff members love her (no surprise), want to come, and what about spouses?

:o:o

Em!!! What have you done??? Maybe you should split the party up and have it on two nights . . . of course your sister will have to pretend to be "surprised" on the second night . . . but y'all have show biz genes from yer dad, I'm sure she could pull it off.

OK Patti . . . are ya back, yet??

Had to pic up a phrame I'm giving as a gift and stop at Kroger on the way back. Hair is straight! It takes a couple days fer the body to come back--right now it's just plain straight. And longer  I pheel so phree!! B)

If I had gorgeous curls like Nik, I would go wif them, but mine are skitzoid--some corkscrews, some waves, no rhyme nor reason to it--plus the phrizz. I was phed up ;)

I buy the mix pre-made at the grocery store, but essentially here is the recipe

Hot Buttered Rum Batter recipe

1 lb brown sugar

1/2 lb salted butter

1 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp ground cloves

1 tsp ground cardamom

1 tsp vanilla

Blend all ingredients in a food processer or mixer and store in the fridge or freezer. To make a drink add a shot of good dark rum along with 1 or 2 tbl spoons of batter to a mug of very hot water or milk. Serve in irish coffee cup.

If I had gorgeous curls like Nik, I would go wif them, but mine are skitzoid--some corkscrews, some waves, no rhyme nor reason to it--plus the phrizz. I was phed up ;)

I have this same affliction, This is what I do to get phrizzless curles (I've tried every hair product out there and these are the best for my hair....):

Wash and condition well

Barely towel dry hair-will still be a little drippy, brush

Spritz all hair with Loreal Tightly Wound spray gel liberally

Add a baseball sized amount of Aussie mousse with leave in conditioner

Comb through

Turn head upside down, fluff up hair.

Using a hair dryer with a diffuser and set on the lowest and hottest setting, dry hair while lightly scrunching-(still upside down until about 1/3 of the way dry, then stand up).

ONLY dry 3/4 of the way, spray with hairspray, scrunch lightly again and adjust hair (like shaking out a bit with fingers) if it's too big ;)

Nik-Nik, can't you blow it out and then straighten it?? Would probably take a bunch of straightening/anti-frizz serum (I like John Freida for super frizzy hair-cuz mine is  )

Sounds like our peeps here, except last week, even when it was a blizzard, they kept saying it was just going to rain any minute......4 inches later..... <_<

It's so warm here, I'm supposed to go skiing on Saturday and on the mountain it's supposed to be in the upper 40's and rain! That should be fun with 2 kids......

I have curly hair envy.

The problem with most straight hair is that it usually isn't actually straight, so it just looks.........blah. <_<

It's about time for a new perm, but I can never get the kind of curls I want. They're either too tight or too limp.

Snow predicted starting tonight......3-6 inches. Might not be working tomorrow :P

I can nae understand it. Every year I look at these damned Peeps "marshmallows" and think, "Everytime you try these, you HATE them, you spit them out and you wonder WHY in the world you took the bite when you KNOW they're aweful!" Guess what I just did again

Did I go out and buy milk and toilet paper like everyone else!!!!! Noooooooo. I went to the library . . . 'cause both of my kids have some hell-atious long-term reading assignments that they (against their will) are going to make some progress on tomorrow since they won't have any homework.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

How do I contact someone at celiac.com concerning the cessation of my weekly e-newsletter? I had been receiving it regularly for years. When I tried to sign-up on the website, my email was not accepted. I tried again with a new email address and that was rejected as well. Thank you in advance!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
