Need Advice On Finding A Specialist

We're not sure if our son, 3y, has celiac or not. We've been living in Japan for the last 6 months and it's extremely difficult to keep gluten free over here. He can only eat so much rice. He used to be allergic to egg whts and yolks and wheat and he's still allergic to dairy and nuts so he's learned how to be a very picky eater.

Anyway, my question is about finding a specialist. Do I need a referral from his ped to see a celiac specialst? I've found a couple names of docs in my area from this site and I don't know if you just "eeny, meeny, miney, moe" or what.

Plus, if anyone lives in our area I would appreciate some suggestions. We live in Vancouver, WA (about 10 miles North of Portland, OR).

Thanks in a advance.

Hi!

I live a little north of Vancouver (about 20 minutes).

I have seen a doctor down there. He's not a specialist though. I just gave him some info about celiac. He's an MD that has branched out into allergies and mercury toxicity. I can give you his info if interested. I really like him.

I don't have any advice about a dr. but just wanted to make sure you know about the gluten freee store in Vancouver. It's called lingonberries. I wish I lived down South, (I live in Everett). I need to take another roadtrip down there soon...LOL

I figure you can at least find wheat free treats for your little one. Ice cream cones, licorice, cookies, etc. They also have kids t.v. dinners that are gluten free. I'm not big on processed foods but they are nice for a quick meal at the sitters or something.

Just a thought....

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
