Severely Glutened By My Cht... What Can I Do?

So I went in for my monthly colonic yesterday... and after my session my CHT gave me the usual probiotic cocktail... I noticed that the color of the cocktail was different... but I didn't think anything of it... and then within an hour of drinking it... all the familiar symptoms came on with a vengeance... severe bloating, cramping, back pain and mucousy poop...

I knew I had been glutened but I couldn't figure out by what... and then I went to her website last night to review the ingredients of the probiotic supplement she gave me... sure enough... barley grass, wheat grass, oats, etc... but I couldn't imagine that she would give this to me knowing I have celiac's (she's also a nutritionist and the one who helped diagnose me)... so I emailed her to ask... sure enough she emails me back this morning apologizing profusely for accidentally glutening me... she said she didn't even consider the ingredients because it was a hypoallergenic formula which typically means that it doesn't contain any of the usual offenders... UGH!!! She recommended that I take some charcoal... but truthfully after being glutened by her I'm not sure I want to try what she suggests... lol...

Anyway I hardly slept a wink last night due to the pain... is there anything I can do to "flush" my system or comfort my intestines? Or do I just simply wait it out like I did when I went gluten free?

Ugh. Sorry to hear this happened.

I have found that if I take Digestive Advantage for IBS when I feel gluten symptoms, it alleviates them. I take this only for about one week and then I get back to normal on my own from there.

You can buy that stuff at places like Walgreens or order through Amazon.

It might not help everybody, I'm not even sure about it for myself, since I haven't been gluten free for even a whole year yet, and I'm never sure exactly what's going on. But when I do feel symptoms coming on, this stuff helps me feel better in a day or two.

Hope it's better soon!

Sorry you got glutened - and by someone you trust. My mom has celiac too and she glutened me once - it is hard to trust people to give you food after that happens.

Sorry to say it, but time is really the only thing that makes it better. You can take things for the symptoms - like immodium (check which kinds are gluten-free), tylenol for headaches, etc, but nothing makes it go away.

I'm not familiar with what the poster above mentioned. I haven't heard anyone mention it before so I don't know what it is or how it works.

I usually try to eat bland foods, drink a lot of water and take care of myself. I was at a work meeting on Tuesday and despite alerting everyone that I needed gluten-free food, I was still glutened by my "special" meal. I'm pregnant now and my symptoms were actually not as bad as they usually are, but it still hasn't been fun. Running to the bathroom in a meeting is not enjoyable.

I hope you feel better soon and that doesn't happen again. I don't know how new you are to all of this, but it usually takes me a few weeks to feel 100% better. I just say that because I don't want you to be surprised if it takes a while.

Feel better soon!

Sorry you're glutened ... I just wait it out and be sure to stay hydrated.

Be sure you check everything you eat/drink -- even from someone you trust!! Everyone makes mistakes, so let it be your own mistake that glutens you next time!!

Thanks so much for your support and knowledge...

I would truly be lost without this forum!!!

I feel better today... but still a little off kilter... I've just been drinking lots of water and carrot juice (known intestinal healer) and just trying to remain calm... I was after all way worse back when I was glutening myself on a daily basis before knowing I had celiac's...

but it's just so cool to be able to come on this board and be able to find answers each and every time... you guys are amazing!!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
