Traveling To Atlanta

I'll be in Atlanta Dec 8-12 for a conference, and I'll be staying at the Hilton Atlanta. I think that's downtown. I've read that I should have some pretty good options for eating out in Atlanta, and I know that a lot of you live there. What can you recommend in the area where I'll be staying, or within reasonable driving distance?

Suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

There is a PF Chang's in Atlanta. Also, Chick-Fil-A lists their gluten free items on line (all of these places depend on your level of comfort with cross contamination, but their fries are supposed to be fried in dedicated fryers)

There are some other options that I never went to (I lived in Auburn, AL for two years, one of which was my first gluten free). I think there are some others on the board who can tell you more about the area...Nini I think is knowledgable. Hope you enjoy your trip. :)

Thank you! Yes, we have Chick-Fil-A around here, and so far so good. I haven't tried a PF Chang's. I'm hoping there will be some wonderful, new and most importantly safe experiences in Atlanta. There aren't too many options for eating out safely here.

You lived in Auburn, eh? Does that make you a Tiger fan? We (Ole Miss) play Auburn here today. I'm admitting it now before the game with full knowledge that I may not want to admit it after the game.

jaten,

floridanative is very knowledgeable on restaurants in the Atlanta area. Hopefully, she'll see this, if not, you could try PM'ing her. :)

I used to live there myself, but have been away now for almost 10 years.

There is a local Celiac Meet Up group that Floridanative has contact info on that has been to a lot of restaurants.

The Sheakspeares Tavern downtown was very accomodating when I went to a dinner theater performance. I called ahead and spoke with the chef, she has a friend with Celiac and has created several dishes so her friend can eat there, just call ahead if you want to go.

Maggiano's carries gluten-free pasta (also recommended to call ahead to make sure they have it in stock)

Ritter's in Marietta can also accomodate you as well as R. Thomas Grill

Outback, PF Changs and Ted's Montana Grill all have gluten-free menus available on their websites

Cafe Life at Life Grocery in Marietta has a wide assortment of raw and living foods many of which are naturally gluten-free, and any of the sandwiches can be prepared with gluten-free bread for $1 more, they usually have at least one gluten-free dessert available (the menu is Vegan)... Again, if you call ahead you can find out what the menu is going to be for the day and what foods on the hot bar or cold bar are gluten-free. (Bonus while you are there you can shop in the newly expanded gluten-free section!) and if you let me know when you are coming maybe I can meet you there!

Jaten, Happy you got some more responses! I loved Atlanta.

And yes, I am a huge Auburn fan! I was there for graduate school 2003-2005. War Eagle! Today is a big football day in my house....my undergrad is from Penn State (1999-2003) and they are playing too!

Love my Lions and Tigers :)

Thanks, everyone! Nisla, those all sound like great suggestions. If our schedules work out it would be great to have a bite and shop at Cafe Life. I'll pm you as it gets closer.

My dh may be coming with me. If so, and your dh & kids are up for it, maybe we could all meet for a meal. Whatever works out. I'll let you know more about my schedule and whether or not dh is coming, a week or 2 before.

If you are downtown (I work downtown right near where you are staying), Ray's in the City (seafood - on Peachtree ST.) is a good place (prices are about $15 and up per meal), and any of the Buckhead LIfe Group restaurants (www.buckheadrestaurants.com) can accomodate you - they are all good but not for kids, and more for charge-in meals :) Also another charge in would be Bone's or Morton's (both steakhouses). Just ask to speak to the chef at any of these. When I go out to lunch downtown (and I'm paying), I usually go to Chipotle and just order a bowl with only the rice and beans and meat - nothinig they have to touch - and have always been fine. I never eat the chips even though they claim they are safe. I've also had good luck at TEd's MOntana Grill (mentioned earlier) and Houston's on Peachtree ST. (call ahead and talk to manager). Further up (about 15 minutes) in Buckhead there is Roy's (another seafood and pricey) and there are plenty of Outback Steakhouses and Chili's, both of which have gluten-free menus online (and SMokey Bones - my favorite bbq place).

Dionek, that's fantastic information! Thank you!

"...Also another charge in would be..." What's a "charge in"? Sorry that's not a term I'm familiar with.

Ray's in the City sounds good....seafood....yum!

I'm a Smokey Bones fan, too. I've had good luck at one about 50 miles from here. What do you order? When you check Clan Thompson's, it says the "grill favorites" are safe. What the heck are grill favorites? No one at Smokey Bones seems to know what they're refering to. I love the Sierra Chicken. What do you eat that's safe at Smokey Bones?

Sorry, a "charge in" means the company is paying for it (versus coming out of your own pocket) :)

The Smokey Bones I go to is at Perimeter mall (about 20 min. or so from downtown) and is probably the closest (unfortunately there isn't one in downtown Atlanta where you will be). I usually stick with the pork plate, or bbq chicken, but I think most of their dishes can be made gluten-free. The kitchen manager is very knowledgeable at the one I go to (he knows all about cross contamination, etc.).

Ray's in the City is great for seafood. Also, if you do venture out to the Perimeter area (where Smokey Bones is), there is a PF Changs and Cheeseburger in Paradise there, which both have gluten-free menus (there is also a Mimi's and Seasons 52 that supposedly can accomodate, although I haven't been to either of those yet).

Enjoy!

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗
