Celiac Disease And Migraine

Hi everybody,

I'm from Austria, 25 years old and was diagnosed celiac disease last year (Sept 05).

Since the gluten-free diet I suffer from migraine (unfortunately with aura).

I personally think it's because my body is not used to the gluten-free diet yet.

Has anybody else discovered the same?

Cheers,

Jazzy

Welcome, Jazzy.

You have been on the gluten-free diet for over a year now. I would think your body has had time to adjust to that. Have you had any general food allergy/sensitivity testing done such as the ALISA test? It is very common for celiacs to develop numerous food allergy/sensitivity problems. The reason is thought to be related to the damage done to the mucosa in the small intestine from the celiac inflammation process. This allows incompletely digested food molecules to pass into the blood stream where they are interpreted by the immune system as foreign invaders, thus triggering an immune response. This immune response causes headaches in some individuals.

There is lots of info on this forum about food allergy/sensitivity testing. There are even kits available that you can purchase online to do the testing at home. Then you send it off to a lab for analysis. The most well-known and trusted seems to be York in the UK. Not cheap though, about $400 US, I think.

Hi Steve,

Is the ALISA test the IgG and IgA test?

I had a blood test on IgG and IgA, however I didn't know that those immune globulins could play a role in food reaction.

I will check out the forum for food allergy/sensitivity.

Thanks! :)

No, not the same test. The IGg and IGA tests are specific tests for celicac disease/gluten sensitivity, I believe.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
