Dizzy All The Time...

Title pretty much sums it up. I'm dizzy all the time. Sitting here at the computer. When I stand up, I get really bad vertigo. Sometimes feel on the verge of passing out. This is really frustrating. I've been hypo for nearly 15 years, and been good at dealing with it...maybe it's this diet? I've been struggling with celiac disease, finding good food, filling food. But I thought I was doing okay. Just don't really feel like it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

My hypoglycemia is out of control too. I've switched from eating raw nuts and something sweet (Bob's candy canes  ) when I would feel it get too low to pb and crackers and it is helping for now.

I have been through so many changes while healing on this diet, that I am hoping this is just one more. And this too shall pass. :)

I think part of mine is that I am soo much more active now than I have been in years. I don't really understand the biology behind it, but I know we burn calories and need more glucose when we are more active.

Sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you, but I figured I would comiserate ... marcia

I have adrenal fatigue, and it can result in being dizzy all the time. That's the first thing my naturopath asks me every time I see him (now that he is treating the adrenals and the low thyroid), "How is your dizziness, has it improved?" Because, apparently, that is one of the most obvious signs of adrenal fatigue.

And no, I am still dizzy all the time, too. It takes a while to improve, apparently, especially if you're in as bad a shape as I am in (with me it's progressed to adrenal burnout, it seems).

Ursula,

Are you hypoglycemic too ? If this keeps up, I would like to learn more about adrenal fatigue. Marcia

BTW, my symptom that my blood sugar is low is shakiness more than dizziness.

When my blood sugar is low, I get shaky too. And headachey.

My hourly snack has been raw almonds and fruit...maybe I'll have to change that.

I am going to have to look into adrenal fatigue. That could very well be it. Especially when I eat all the things I usually eat to calm my hypoglycemia, and it doesn't work. :(

My hypoglycemia was much worse before the diet, and for spells as I was getting started (Been gluten-free since February 2006). For a while nothing I ate would last and I had a very hard time bringing my levels back up. I think it is that while we are still sick or still healing, we have a harder time digesting and absorbing food, especially proteins. Take out many of the products that give us sugars (breads, pastas, etc), even though they are the bad kind, and you compound the problem.

Nuts are notoriously hard to digest (and that had become my staple snack at first). As a replacement snack, a cooworker with Crohns suggested using boiled egg whites and that seems to help. So you may just need to experiment with foods and see what sticks with you and what doesn't. You also might want to try taking an enzyme pill when you eat to help you break down and absorb the proteins.

Don't know if this helps but when I get dehydrated the same thing happens, I get dizzy and feel bad. I started eating the Pedialyte Freezer Pops and it seems to take care of the problem. I have a hard time beleiving I am dehydrated because I am drinking all day long, it could be the electrolytes. Maybe it will help you.

Yes, I am hypoglycemic, too. But that seems to have gotten much better with taking all the foods I am intolerant to out of my diet.

Ursula,

Bummer !! I don't think I can handle eliminating any more foods at this point. But, who knows what I will be motivated to do after the holidays. :P Marcia

In response to your questions regarding probiotics.  I have had Celiac for 40 years.  Stomach issues: digestion, IBS to chronic constipation, bloat after eating anything.  I was unable to eat a healthy variety of foods, tried probiotics supplements - some made me worse, others made no difference.  After reading about people with Crones, IBS, etc, who made their own probiotics I started making Milk Kefir: not water Kefir. There are 10 probiotics in milk KEFIR. After 3 weeks I was able to eat more, no gas, no IBS.  If you have a computer just ask for videos on making milk Kefir. I branched out and make my own Kombucha for even more probiotics. I do not make my yogurt because there are only about four probiotics in that. I started this when I was 82 and I still make my own Kefir and Kombucha. My stomach issues were fixed with the Milk Kefir alone. If you decide to try making it, make certain you order MILK GRAINS. The finished product tastes a bit like Buttermilk. I hope this helps in your journey to good health.

Help me out here. Lauren Dam gluten-free beer from Spain is listed as gluten free. Yet its made from Barley Malt. I thought barley and any form had gluten. Anybody have any more information about it?

Ferritin levels.  And see what your hemoglobin looks like too, that will tell you if you are anemic?  You can have 'low normal' levels that will not be flagged by blood tests.  I had 'low normal' levels, my lab reading was. c12, just over what was considered normal, but I had small benign lesion on my tongue, and sometimes a sore mouth, and a consultant maxillofacial ordered an iron infusion for me as he felt my levels were too low and if he  raised them to 40, it would help.   Because you are not feeling 100% it might be worth looking at your levels, then discussing with your doctor if they are low normal.  But I stress, don't supplement iron without your levels being monitored, too much is dangerous.

Hi Katht -  I sympathize with your struggles in following a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. I found out that I had Celiac Disease a few months before I turned 70. I just turned 89 and it has taken me almost 20 years to attain a fairly normal intestinal  function. I also lost a lot of weight, down to 100 lb. down from about 140 lb. What Trents wrote you was very true for me. I am still elimination foods from my diet. One person suggested you keep a food diary and that is a good idea but it is probably best just to do an elimination diet. There are several ne and maybe one for celiacs. I used one for a while and started with plain rice and zucchini and then added back other foods to see if I reacted or not. That helped a great deal but what I did not realise that it would only very small amounts of some foods to cause inflammation in my intestine. Within the last few years I have stopped eating any trace amounts of hot peppers, corn and soy(mostly in supplements) and nuts, (the corn in Tylenol was giving me stomach aches and the nuts were causing foot pains). Starting an elimination diet with white rice is better than brown rice that has some natural toxins. In addition it is very important to drink sufficient plain water. You can find out how much to drink for your height and weight online. I do have difficulty drinking 48 ounces of water but just recently have found an electrolyte supplement that helps me stay well hydrated, Adding the water and electrolytes may reduce muscle cramps and gag spams you wrote about. . Also buy some anti-gluten enzyme capsules to take with meals. I use GliadinX advertised here. These are a lot of things to do at one time as they reflect my 20 years of experience. I hope you do what you can manage to do over time. Good luck and take care.
