Can You Taste Gluten?

I have noticed that every time that I eat something that is cross-contaminated with gluten, it does not taste as it should. For me, steak has a pasty taste if it has gluten on it, and hamburger has a spicy taste if it has gluten on it. I'm always too ignorant to pay attention to it, but afterwards I always get glutened. Can anyone else taste a difference in their food?

Gluten = bitter. For me anyways. Thats why I know when something has gluten in it (well, dont know until after I eat it of course). It tastes rotten/moldy.

I was going to say metallic--but somewhat bitter, also.

This is really interesting. Some people with food allergies complain of a metallic taste---I wonder how that happens?

I dont notice a difference. Interesting that some do!

In the process of going gluten-light before going gluten-free I really started noticing an "off" taste whenever eating gluten...thought I was just going crazy :wacko:

I'm going to start paying attention when it happens from now on. It's a nice warning sign for those of us who can taste a difference.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
