Yes, someone had posted that they were gluten-free. However, someone else had also posted some information in regards to some of the ingredients in Centrum that are toxic. I've been checking out Hazmap and a few other sites which offer toxicity information on chemicals being used in foods and other products and it is quite concerning. If you haven't purchased a multi-vitamin yet, you may want to look into another product such as Animal Parade or even the Nordic Naturals Berries. They are whole-food based and seem to have ingredients that are less questionable.

Centrum Kids are gluten-free. Our nutritionist just put my daughter on them after her celiac diagnosis. They come in Spongebob and Dora, 180 in the bottle I think. Kids under 4 take 1/2 vitamin per day. I know that GummyVites are also gluten-free. We had been using them but the nutritionist told us that celiac disease kids need magnesium and zinc in their diets and that the other vitamins on the market don't offer those particular minerals.

I agree with the magnesium and zinc deficiencies found in celiacs. But the ingredients in Centrum that provide these are precisely the ones which are found on Toxnet, HAZMAP and the other hazardous chemical sites. Plus, the sucrose in Centrum is made from asparatame....a neurotoxin. I've only researched 5 or 6 of the ingredients so far and it's a bit scary. The synthetic vit D in it is commonly used as either synthetic Vit D or in rat poison (strange combinational use). Sunlight would probably be a much better option. ;)

I don't know. I suppose that if you look hard enough, you can find objectionable ingredients in just about anything....but seeing so many ingredients listed on hazardous material sites and regulated by OSHA and EPA....it makes me uncomfortable. Maybe it's just me (probably is). My dd has so many food sensitivities and the more we stay away from synthetic ingredients, the healthier she gets. But I'm sure that a lot of others don't have the same multiple sensitivities that we do. At this point, if I can't pronounce an ingredient in food...we don't buy the product. lol!! So far, it's working for us though! Like everything else, it comes down to personal experience and choice.

Not any more!

I called the company about 2 years ago and had confirmed that they were gluten-free. My son has been taking them. Then on a recent post someone said Centrum had changed their formula and are no longer gluten free.

I checked the Wyeth/Centrun website for the labeling and here is how it starts:

INGREDIENTS: Sucrose, Dibasic Calcium Phosphate, Mannitol (wheat), Calcium Carbonate, Stearic Acid (soybean), Magnesium

I went home and checked my bottle and sure enough, it said wheat right on it!!! Obviously I was very upset. We have switched to Gummy Vites (I think that's what they are called). They say right on the bottle that they do not contain wheat (gluten). I got them at Walgreens. My kids like them better!

Holy moly! I just saw that mannitol on there! That makes me crazy b/c we just went to the nutritionist about 1 month ago and were told to go and buy these right away.

I think you may be correct. The way the results are printed makes it appear as though it’s the ttg iga but I think you’re right—the 646 is total iga. So this would be indicative of another issue (another autoimmune condition, infection, cancer, etc.) and my doctor would need to do further testing. Thank you for saying this!

Are you sure that is the TTG IgA? Based on the units (mg/dL) and having an upper limit to the normal range, it looks like a total IgA result.

I am wondering if there are any vegetarians or vegans on this forum. I’ve been vegan for 15+ years and am just finding out I likely have celiac disease (blood panel done, need biopsy). My favorite foods—outside of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds—I will likely have to give up. Anyone else?

Welcome to the forum, @Trish G! "Gluten free" does not necessarily equate to "no gluten". According to FDA standards it actually means that a food product contains no more than 20ppm of gluten. This is safe for most celiacs but would not be for those who are on the more sensitive end of the spectrum. So, it would depend on the individual celiac and their level of sensitivity to minor amounts of gluten. That's the long and nuanced answer. The short answer is that it is a product derived from wheat and so you can be certain it will contain some residual amounts of gluten. No gluten removal process is 100% effective. So, to be absolutely certain, stay away from it. Have you tried chia seeds? Very high in fiber and quickly turns into a gel when added to water. Make sure you get seeds that are gluten free if you decide to try it.

I was taking Benefiber for my IBS-C before my celiac diagnosis. It does say Gluten Free but lists Wheat Dextrin on the label. I really dont like psyllium fiber, so is there anything else I can take or is the Benefiber really ok for someone with Celiac disease?  Thanks!!!
