Pain Meds After C-section

Hi! New to the forum, new to gluten-free lifestyle. What a difference it has made already. The fact that I'm even asking a pregnancy question is a positive spin on the last four months of suffering.

Question for moms...What gluten-free pain relieving options are available while recovering from a c-section? For my son, I took Tylenol 3. It sounds like Tylenol is ok to take??? Plus, from other postings, I would have to take my own medication to the hospital with me after I notified the hospital that I was bringing my own medication??

What has been your past experiences while gluten-free?

Thanks so much!

I wasn't gluten free during my pregnancies or sections. Found out when my youngest was 3 months old. Aside from the narcotic drug they give you to take home they also gave me extra strength ibuprofen I think it was. I always went off the narcotic meds within a day or two of coming home.

The drug I was on with my first caused me weird dreams and my daughter was reacting negatively to them as well. If you don't overdo it, have someone to help you at least the first two weeks, you may be ok with going off the narcotics quickly. I didn't like having everything in my system.

I believe tylenol is fine.

Tylenol 3 worked for me. I had my baby naturally but had an episiodomy. So, pain was still def. there!!

I heard that Vicodin is ok and with my experience it has been (gluten-free wise), however, it may have an effect on the baby if you decide to breastfeed. Tylenol 3 is ok w/breastfeeding.

Hi and welcome! :)

I just got out of the hospital 4 days ago after having a hysterectomy. When I was switched to oral pain meds, the hospital checked their Tylenol 3 for me and found that it was gluten-free. Since I've been home, I've been using Extra Strength Tylenol Caplets--they are gluten-free.

As far as taking my own meds, one of the pills I take every day is a name brand that I have long ago verified to be gluten-free. That one, they supplied to me while there. The other is a generic--to save time (I guess), they instructed me to bring in my own bottle of that med.

During my pre-op appointment, I asked about all of this and also requested that I be allowed to bring in all of my own meals to avoid possible cross contamination. The hospital was wonderful about everything--I brought (or my husband brought) in my food, and the meds were no problem at all.

They made numerous notations on my chart about the Celiac, and it was printed on my red "allergy bracelet" that I had to wear.

The best advice I have is to go in pre-prepared. Let the hospital know of your needs and concerns--and be specific. If I thought a point was not being taken, I repeated myself.

Best of luck to you!

I took percocet (sp?) with no problems at all.

Thanks so much everybody. It is good to know that I don't have to "grin and bear it" when it comes to post-surgical pain. I hope this thread will help someone else too.

Absolutely my point with Kerrigan, the owner. She stood to secure many years of faithful patronage by simply inviting us in for a pastry or lunch. Or by simply producing another $50 e-card based on trust. We would have been highly satisfied. We are limited to a few restaurants in the area, and that would have been one. It was very disappointing, esp to my wife, to realize we can't patronize the place anymore.

You would think any business would see the wisdom of honoring a $50 gift certificate on the basis of customer satisfaction alone, apart from any questions about software glitches.

So there was no physical, plastic card involved, correct?

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.
