Hi :)

If you get "backed up" do you experience severe bloating and pain? I thought i'd been glutened yesterday, but I think it was just some serious C.

Also, if you take something to help you go, do you often feel better as it starts working but before you actually go? I felt horrible all day yesterday than I mixed some miralax with V8. This morning I felt almost back to normal even before I actually went. The only thing I can think is that it was because the Miralax has already softened the "stuff" which provided relief even before it came out.

Any thoughts?

You know, Elizabeth, that 'serious C' can be a symptom of a glutening as well as D? Especially if it is accompanied by bloating and pain. With me, a glutening can go either way. Sometimes stomach and bowel cramps followed by D, or bloating, severe pain and C.

Try drinking some prune juice, or eat some steamed prunes. Also, drinking lots of water is helpful.

I had some serious C due to the neurological damage . . . my autonomic nervous system doesn't know how to function properly, so I don't sweat, don't have intestinal peristalsis, etc. I take Miralax twice a day . . . it has been a Godsend. I tried everything . . . the only time I would go is when I took two Pericolace, drank two to three bottles of water, ate 14-15 prunes and took magnesium . . . it was pretty bad. The GI doc doesn't seem to be too worried about the Miralax and dependency . . . he gave me a year's prescription for it.

I used to have this all the time, except when I had "D". :unsure: My body had forgotten how to go on it's own. I later found out wheat does this to me. Even a minute amount ...

Have you tried using oils, like EVOO, grapeseed oil, flax or borage ? These are good for you and will not affect have a negative effect your cholesteral.

I don't remember feeling better before going but it has been a long time since I was like this. Kefir can make my stomach feel better if I am bloated though.

I drink dandelion coffee (the granules not the tea bags, the latter doesn't work as well) from the health shop, seems to help me go v regularly. Seems to stimulate my liver and get everything working well and I feel really good on it. Just one cup and not even every day.

Yes, I definitely get more C when I've been glutened. I have found that since I went gluten-free, my C isn't nearly as bad, but I still have it. Even when I was on an elimination diet I had it.

I should go get some prunes... I always forget about that as being a good remedy. Thanks :)

Are you sure your C isn't from being glutened? Just a thought.

Before going gluten-free I was almost always C. Went maybe once a week. Since going gluten-free I only get C when I've been glutened. Terrible bloating and pain then C for several days.

      He’s noticed it after having a few different kinds of nuts and nuts on top of a gluten free nut bar. and it’s happened after having some fresh caught fish, and tonight from packaged plain salmon from the supermarket. He has stomach cramps and feels the need to vomit to try and relieve the symptoms.

      Welcome to the forum, @Celiacpartner! Does this happen with all nuts and all fish or just certain kinds? And are we talking about products that are advertised as gluten-free eaten at home or things served in a restaurant?

      Hello. My husband was diagnosed with celiac disease 30yrs ago. He has a gluten free diet, with the odd bit of contamination when eating out or eating something that says may contain, which he probably shouldn’t but he seems to tolerate his diet ok. The last few times he has eaten fish and larger servings of nuts he has noticed stomach pains like he used to get when he eats gluten. After 30yrs of getting it right and knowing what he can and can’t have with essentially no major instances, this has thrown us. Could this be a new intolerance or an allergy and has it happened to anyone else after so many years? thanks

      My reaction to a gluten bolus exposure is similar to yours, with 2-3 hours of severe abdominal cramps and intractable emesis followed by several hours of diarrhea. I don't necessarily equate that one large exposure to gluten with significant intestinal lining damage, however. I think it's just a violent reaction to a what the body perceives to be a somewhat toxic substance that I am no longer tolerant of because I have quit exposing myself to it regularly. It's just the body purging itself of it rather than an expression of significant damage. Before diagnosis, when I was consuming gluten daily, I had little to no GI distress. I was, for the most part, a "silent celiac". The damage to my small bowel lining didn't happen all at once but was slow and insidious, accumulating over a period of years. The last time I got a big shot of gluten was about three years ago when I got my wife's wheat biscuits mixed up with my gluten-free ones. There was this acute reaction after about two hours of ingestion as I described above. I felt washed out for a few days and fully recovered within a week or so.  Now, I'm a 74-year-old male. So, I'm not worried about being pregnant. And I don't want to contradict your physicians advice. But I just don't think you have done significant damage to your small bowel lining by one episode of significant gluten ingestion. I just don't think it works that way.

      Wondering about some thoughts on how long to wait to try to get pregnant after a gluten exposure?  I have been diagnosed for 10 years and have followed the diet strictly. I have been cross contaminated before, but have never had a full on gluten exposure. I went to a restaurant recently, and the waiter messed up and gave me regular bread and told me it was gluten free. 2 hours later I was throwing up for the whole evening. I have never had that kind of reaction before as I have never had such a big exposure. My husband and I were planning to start trying to get pregnant this month. My dr did blood work to check for electrolytes and white blood cells, but did not do a full nutritional panel. Most of my GI symptoms have resolved in the past 2 weeks, but I am definitely still dealing with brain fog, fatigue and headaches. My dr has recommended I wait 3 months before I start to try to get pregnant.   I have read else where about how long it can take for the intestine to fully heal, and the impacts gluten exposure can have on pregnancy. I guess I am really wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? How long does it take to heal after 1 exposure like that, after following the diet so well for 10 years? Is 3 months an okay amount of time to wait? Is there anything I can do in the meantime to reduce my symptoms?
