Sunday River Trip - Bethel, Me

Hello --

I'm heading up to Bethel, ME to go skiing next week for vacation. We're going to be staying in one of the lodges affiliated with the Mountain.

Anyone been to this area and have any recommendations for places to eat. I'll probably bring snacks for the lodge, but we would like to go out & eat.

Sorry, I don't know of any places. When I went last year I took all of my food with me. Have you tried talking with the lodge to see if they have any advice?

Hey Penny -

Thanks for the advice. I have not called the lodge. I was curious firstly if anyone had happened upon some fabulous gluten-free place that might happen to be in the area - wishful thinking!

I usually bring food to get by - and can also find something to eat at most restaurants, so I should be fine...

Just wanted to update this since BostonCeliac and I have both been there and had good experiences!

This is what BostonCeliac told me: Actually, there is a great little coffee shop/internet cafe on Main street in Bethel called "Bean & Mouse" or something along those lines... When we were in there I was drooling over a piece of cake and I (jokingly) asked if they had it gluten free -- and she mentioned they occasionally did have gluten free chocolate cake!! Not that day - but you may want to check it out! How nice that would be.

We stayed at the Jordan Grand and also had a kitchen so made food in the room mainly. One night we did go to Phoenix House which was cool - and the waitress was totally aware of celiac - so she made sure my roasted chix & potatoes were gluten-free...

Also - we stopped at the Hannaford's that is on the way -- and they had Redbridge (!) and a vast gluten free selection including Tinkyada pasta for a reasonable price!! I would definitely recommend that -- their selection was bigger than my Shaw's here in MA.

And I told her: We basically did what you did- stopped at Hannaford and hit the jackpot. We ate at the pub at White Cap one night (Shiphaus Brewery). I had ribs with blueberry BBQ sauce and mashed potatoes. The waitress was totally celiac aware- her nephew has autism and he is gluten and casein free so that was great. AND they had Cold River which is the potato vodka made in Maine.

Got a foot of snow while we were there! Longer ski season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BEV- GREAT INFO

GOING TO SAVE AS JIM AND I WERE IN THAT AREA BEFORE GOING gluten-free AND WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK.

I'm still impressed with that Hannaford's up there!

      Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

      Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !

It feels like the longest month ever, but you are doing the right thing to get a clear diagnosis, which can be crucial for your long-term health and getting the proper care.
