My dog (not in the picture) is not on a gluten free diet. I just wanted to remind those who have Celiac Disease or gluten allergies to make sure that they wash their hands after they feed their pets. It goes without saying "Don't use the contaminated food".

Rat Poison is the source for the contaminated pet food.

Hmmm, yet another great reason to be Gluten Free :blink:

I believe you are right. That is a very plausible explanation. The thing is, rats are often immune to poison. They always eat very small amounts of things. If they get sick once, they won't eat that food again. They are highly intelligent. Did you know they can tread water for 3 days straight?

They also can end up in people's toilets because they are able to collapse their ribs when going through the plumbing pipes. Don't worry, this does not happen often! Rats are so intelligent, they are even being used to find landmines to safely remove them. People in foreign countries can use rats to sniff out the mines, and they are lightweight enough that they do not set them off. Rats also tell other rats about good meals like people do! :P

I am glad my dog is on a gluten free dog food too. Rat poison. That is scary.

Thanks, here is a rat story from my past. Eek! When I was five I was living in New Orleans and my parents came into my bedroom late one night with a flashlight and wanted to look under my bed. "It's nothing, go back to sleep", they said. Long story short, a rat had climbed down the chimney and hunkered down, down there. I slept with the covers on until late into my twenties, regardless of the temperature...but I raised a whole bunch of gerbils and some mice in the meantime. I love the little rodents and agree that they are some of the smartest creatures on the planet. Now I'm still concerned about my cat on the 9Lives wet food, even though it's not on the list. She just needs to go to the vet and she could run for president surely, but...you know. :)

Wow! That would be weird! You know in the documentary I saw, this guy actually got freaked out by one breaking into his house! :lol: It opened his refrigerator by itself! He got so scared, that he shut the refrigerator door and duct taped it shut! :lol: That was so funny!

Your situation would be a little different. First of all, you were a girl. Second, you had no idea what that noise was! I personally think they are kind of cute, but that is just me. If I had one, I would name him Templeton.

Maybe your cat could be president! She was born here, right? :P

Question-why do y'all have your pets on gluten-free diets? Do they need to be? Where do you find out what brands are gluten-free?

They changed gluten suppliers. My impression is that the gluten was contaminated, but I tell everyone I know it's because gluten is evil :) I printed the story, highlighted the bit about the gluten being bad and posted it at the entrance of my cube.

Funny but a year ago, I didn't know what Gluten was. Now it is everwhere I look. Sort of like when you buy a car, you suddenly notice all the cars that look like yours....

yeah, I totally agree w/ this. now everytime someone is talking to me about their health problems, I wonder....do you have celiac too? lol

Sorry, I'm joining this thread late, and maybe this has already been discussed...but I doubt it because this is news that came out last night. Are we now having to stop feeding our animals the Menu dry foods as well? Both my dog and two cats are on President's Choice and Ol' Roy kibble. Don't know what to think.

A friend of mine was looking for updated info today while I was at her house. She said at first they were saying rat poison but now they know that it was some substance that is used in making plastic that contaminated the gluten used in the pet food. They don't know how this stuff got into the gluten.

      @Scatterbrain, Thiamine Vitamin B1 and amino acid Taurine work together.  Our bodies can make Taurine from meats consumed.  Our bodies cannot make Thiamine and must consume thiamine from food.  Meat is the best source of B vitamins like Thiamine.   Vegetarians may not make sufficient taurine since they don't eat meat sources of taurine.  Seaweed is the best vegetarian source of taurine. Vegetarians may not consume sufficient Thiamine since few veggies are good sources.  Whole grains, legumes, and nuts and seeds contain thiamine.  Many of these sources can be hard to digest and absorb for people with Celiac disease.   You may find taking the forms of thiamine called Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and a B Complex will give the benefits you're looking for better than taurine alone.

      @Jmartes71, I went to Doterra's site and had a look around.  The Doterra TerraZyme supplement really jumped out at me.  Since we, as Celiacs, often have digestive problems, I looked at the ingredients.  The majority of the enzymes in this supplement are made using black mold, Aspergillus!  Other enzymes are made by yeast Saccharomyces!  Considering the fact that Celiac often have permeable intestines (leaky gut syndrome), I would be very hesitant to take a product like this.  Although there may not be live black mold or yeast in the product, the enzymes may still cause an immune system response which would definitely cause inflammation throughout the body.   Skin, eyes, and intestines are all made from the same basic type of cells.  Your skin on the outside and eyes can reflect how irritated the intestines are on the inside.  Our skin, eyes, and intestines all need the same vitamins and nutrients to be healthy:  Vitamin A, Niacin B3 and Tryptophan, Riboflavin B2, Biotin B7, Vitamin C, and Omega Threes.  Remember that the eight B vitamins work together.  Just taking high doses of just one, vitamin like B12, can cause a deficiency in the others.  Taking high doses of B12 can mask a Folate B9 deficiency.  If you take B12, please take a B Complex, too.  Thiamine B1 can be taken in high doses safely without toxicity.  Thiamine is needed by itself to produce energy so every cell in the body can function, but Thiamine also works with the other B vitamins to make life sustaining enzymes and digestive enzymes.  Deficiencies in either Niacin, Vitamin C, or Thiamine can cause digestive problems resulting in Pellagra, Scurvy, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi.   If you change your diet, you will change your intestinal microbiome.  Following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, a Paleo diet, will starve out SIBO bacteria.  Thiamine keeps bacteria in check so they don't get out of control as in SIBO.  Thiamine also keeps MOLDS and Yeasts from overgrowth.   Menopause symptoms and menstrual irregularities are symptomatic of low Vitamin D.   Doctors are not as knowledgeable about malnutrition as we need them to be.  A nutritionist or dietician would be more helpful.   Take control of your diet and nutrition.  Quit looking for a pill that's going to make you feel better overnight.  The Celiac journey is a marathon, not a sprint.   "Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food."

      The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.

      I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.
