I have a lot of allergies (se sig. line) along with legume, casein and gluten intolerance and I haven't been able to find any snacks to eat besides Enjoy Life's Very Berry Bar and granola. My husband is feeling all the boxes of Very Berry bars I go though in a week is heavy on our economy so I am trying to find something else.

I do eat fruits and veggies but I am looking for a snack to feed my sweet tooth. Something to eat when everyone else is eating their candy, chips, ice cr

I food process together dates and walnuts. If you can't have walnuts try dark chocolate and coconut flakes with the dates. I roll them into balls and keep 'em in the frig.

Can you have any peanut butters, or maybe make your own? My mother used to make me stuffed monkeys. They're dates stuffed with peanut butter then rolled in powdered sugar. They're very sweet, but tasty.

I also like dried fruit for a sweet, candy-like snack. You could even dry your own fruit if you have many sensitivities. Plus, dried fruit keeps for a while and it's oh so good. Better for you than candy too.

Sometimes when I'm having a sweet craving I eat some applesauce and that sometimes does the trick.

I know, my ideas are all fruit related. Fruit is such a good, healthy snack though. You could try strawberries dipped in melted chocolate too if you can find safe chocolate. That's always a treat.

Can't do the walnuts. I'll try dates, chocolate (I have heard of a soy free one but haven't been able to find it yet) and coconut flakes.

Thanks. =)

Can't do peanuts (legumes) and I do like fruits, but I am allergic to most of them. :( Strawberries and apples are both out for me. I eat lots of bananas and melons (different kinds) and I also love raspberries. I guess I could try dipping them in chocolate (if I can finally find that soy free one). Dipping banana would be good too.

I am all for healthy snacks, but sometimes it would be great to just have a proper "sweet tooth snack"... But I doubt that will really happen.

Thank you both!

Would you like a recipe for dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free brownies? (gluten-free of course, too.) I just made them last night for my daughter to take to school. I'm off chocolate, but my kids assured me that they're delicious. I usually make them out of carob, but my daughter wanted chocolate for school.

Hi Jenny :D

I know how you feel, being intolerant to darn near everything myself....

One of my favorite treats is chocolate or butterscotch pudding. I use 3 cups vanilla almond milk to 2 small boxes of Jello pudding (the kind you cook). It is so yummy!

I can't do Almond milk. The Rice milks I have seen have legume in them...so I need to make my own. Some how. (I wish I was more of a baker..) Then maybe I can use my homemade rice milk with that Jello. ;) I have never had Jello actually. Ever. Can you tell I am not from around here? ;) (From Sweden, married an Alaskan 8 years ago)

Need some type of Vanilla in there too probably..

Jerseyangel (my DNA twin), can you eat chocolate? (soy free that is) I had that brown bag brownie mix that is supposed to be free of everything bad..and it kept me up all night. I am not sure I can do chocolate or if it was just something in the mix. Egg, that Xanthangum...Something. I am actually scared of trying new stuff these days. Everything makes me feel nasty almost. The better it tastes the worse I feel usually.

I managed to make a good "spagetti sauce" with tomato and stuff a while back. It made the rice pasta taste like regular pasta even. It was heaven to eat "normal". At least it felt like food from the old days. It almost brought me to tears as I ate it. ;P My husband is really good with mixing spices and I felt good afterwards too. Yummy.

Jenny, can you get Pacific Rice Milks where you are? They don't contain legume. I use several of their products.

Actually Jello is a fruity gelatin dessert (that is gluten-free, by the way)--they also make a pudding mix--that's the one I was referring to. Jello is a Kraft company, so they disclose any gluten on the package.

Yes, I can eat chocolate :P Sorry that you are reacting to something in the mixes....you should probably stick to things with few ingredients until you pinpoint which you are intolerant to.

I make hot cocoa with almond milk (you could substitute rice), Nestle Pure cocoa powder and a little sugar. It's really good.

I just thought of something--can you eat potatoes? There's a good milk sub based on potatoes called Vance's Dari Free. I have to order it because it's not available here. If you want, I will get their link to you.

Anyway, glad at least you had a great pasta dinner! We'll figure this thing out--you *need* some treats!

Liz--

I am so trying those brownies! They look really good--I've never seen a brownie recipe with maple syrup. Wow...

I'm going to use the egg, though.

Don't tell anyone on the diet thread

I won't tell! Please enjoy them for me. I'm not eating chocolate until Easter and those brownies looked awfully good when I was cutting them up this morning. There are still a few in the pan and I'm just trying to stay out of the kitchen to avoid temptation. PLEASE let me know if they turn out for you. I've been making them with carob for years and just tried them with chocolate. My kids love this recipe.

The Pacific Rice Milk has Guar Gum in it, which is a Legume. It took a while for me to figure out why my stomach didn't like that one.

Ingredients

FILTERED WATER, BROWN RICE, EXPELLER PRESSED CANOLA OIL, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, NATURAL FLAVOR, SEA SALT, GUAR GUM, XANTHAN GUM, CARRAGEENAN, CAROB BEAN GUM, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, VITAMIN D2.

So I am gonna try make my own rice milk eventually. I miss eating milk and cereal sometimes.

I'll definitely have to check that potato milk out! =)

(Is Carob Bean a Legume?? I'll have to check that one too.)

(And here is the answer; Yes, the Carob bean is a legume. Open Original Shared Link )

Oh and I love Pacifics' Organic Low Sodium Chicken Broth. Free of Legumes, Dairy and Gluten. My stomach aproves every time.

Oh I remember! I just bought that one the other day. I haven't tried it yet though. Love Enjoy Life's stuff. I wish their trail mix would be apple free though. :P I wrote them and asked if they could make it apple free.. ;) Probably will not happen though.

Jenny,

You're absolutely right about the guar gum--I knew it was legume. I don't react to such a small amount, so I forgot it was even in there!

Lucky you! I can't believe how sensitive I seem to be. Tiny, tiny amounts.

Is this that Potato drink? Open Original Shared Link

Looks promising. I'll have to order some I think.

I have to get mine online too. Would you recommend I get their mixer/pitcher too?

You poor thing! Maybe after avoiding your sensitivities for a while, you will be able to tolerate some every once in a while. I completely avoided rice for 6 months, and I can eat it now--so there is hope :D

Yes, that's the product that I use. I would recommend the pitcher because it tends to clump on the bottom, and is hard to mix up with a spoon. The pitcher with the mixer built onto the top is so much easier and neater, too. I put it in the dishwasher and it comes out fine. Definately worth it.

I can eat rice (at least brown) but the stuff I am intolerant to (gluten, dairy and legumes) I can handle not even traces of it seems. So most processed foods are out even if many are made gluten free. If there is gluten in the facility or been used on the same machine I can't eat it and feel well. Most of the time anyways. Makes me very limited. :(

I'll get the pitcher then. Thanks. Hope the drink works for me.

Enjoy Life foods makes soy free chocolate chips. I usually buy them online, but I can buy them in one store here. It's just not a store that I go to very often and when I buy online, I really stock up.

You can get unsweetened cocoa nibs or beans at the health food store. At least I can. These can be ground up and sweetened with some agave nectar, or even the dates as someone else said. Coconut, dates and chocolate ground together is delicious! I roll them in balls and then in more coconut so the outsides aren't sticky. You can add a touch of mint extract to this, provided you are not allergic.

I also bought a snack in a little box at the health food store that is a mix of unsweetened cocoa nibs, flaked coconut and raisins. Daughter loves the stuff. It's a bit too sweet for me.

Can you eat popcorn? I make it in a pan with coconut oil and some Real Salt sprinkled on.

If you are not allergic to bananas, you can make a quick ice cream from it by cutting the bananas in chunks and freezing them. Overripe ones will work well for this. Then put the frozen chunks in the blender and process them until smooth. You can add other fruits to this, maple syrup, nuts, or even cocoa nibs.

Using a similar technique, you can do a sorbet of sorts with other types of fruit like canned pineapple (reserve the juice), strawberries or other berries. I think peaches would work well for this too. Freeze the pieces, then put in the blender adding a bit of the reserved juice if needed. If you don't have any reserved juice, you can add a bit of water or any other kind of fruit juice you are not allergic to.

I'll have to print out this thread. :P

Jenny,

If you do get the Vance's, it makes a pretty good "ice cream". I have several recipes if you ever need them.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
