Why Am I The Unlucky One To Gain Weight?

I have been having problems with my right eye and it has been flacky and irritated and red for almost a year now. I decided to go to the allergist and he did a very thorough allergy teston me and to our surprise I tested a 5 on wheat. I was also allergic to many other thengs as well. I am a very healthy person and I can't believe that he thinks I may have Celiacs desease.

When I took wheat out of my diet (for 10 days) I still had an itchy rash but my bowels moved so good...I lost like almost ten pounds and had more energy and my eye was looking better. When I re-introduced wheat back in my diets my diet I gained the weight that was lost within 2-3 days. I don't eat a lot and it didn't make since at all! When I told my doc about the results he said that I may have Celiacs desease or eosinophilic gastroenteritis ( a rare whitle blood cell desease that has to do with the stomach, small and lasrge intestine).

When I looked up Celiacs desease I really don't have a lot of the symtoms b/c I have constipation and weight gain...whereas most peopple have weight loss and diarrhea.

My grandfather died a year ago and I went into a major depression (im better now;) but that was wehn I started having problems with my eye and my weight went from 150 to 163 and I do all the same stuff as I always have. I can't seem to lose weight and I didn't understand why b/c I was monitoring my calories and exerciseing but it never came off. Now with this possible diag I feel better that the weight me not have been my fault.

My question is I'm curious to know if anyone has had a similiar experience with celiac...as far as not having the typical symtoms and the loss maybe triggering the desease?

Thanks for taking time to read my story!!!

You sound so much like me - unbelievable! Have you been tested by a gastroenterolotist? I have last year, negative biopsy and I don't know about blood results. I'm going to see another GI doc in a few weeks.

My eyes became very irritated last spring. It was around the same time as I tried a gluten-free diet (maybe a bit before). Now it's almost just my right eye as well! It get red just along the upper lash line, swollen, itchy and a bit dry. I hate not wearing makeup so I purchased some hypoallergenic mascara (Neutrogena) and can't wear any eyeliner - just eye shadows. Also, if I fall aspleep wearing eye makeup, my lids are very irritated the next morning. Since my left eye got pretty much ok after a year, I'm hoping that in another year I'll be fine

As for the symptomps (constipation and weight gain), while most people have the opposite problem, you can still have celiac or be "just" gluten intolerant. I gained 15lbs since last summer (I went off the gluten-free diet last fall) and I look "pregnant" most of the time. I'm also suspecting casein to be the cause.

So to answer your question - I don't know if I have the disease but I do suspect that I am intollerant to certain foods (just need to figure out what they are). Good luck!

All this is very new to me b/c I just ended the gluten-free diet last week. When I told the doc what happened during the diet he just told me it is either celiac or that rare disorder I mentioned above and referred me to a GI doc but I wont be seen until the middle of July! So I don't know what to do until then...do i eat wheat...or does the GI doc need me to have the gluten in me to tell if I have c/d? What tests do they do on you at the GI? I don't want a colonoscopy :o !!

I've had eczema all my life and I'm wondering if I was misdiagnosed and i have had this desease all my life? I always thought it was weird that I never grew out of it as a kid... I don't want to eat something that will harm me????

I had weight gain too but when I went gluten free I gained another 20 pds, so you are lucky that gluten free helped you lose weight. I'm now being very strict and I've only lost 5 pds in almost 3 weeks UG!! I guess I should be happy though that I'm finally taking it off the right way. Maybe it will stay off now lol!! Good Luck and I hope you get some answers soon!!

Constipation and weight gain are common symptoms in Celiacs. Whenever I am glutened I get either diarrhea or constipation, often just constipation though. Sometimes I even get both, one after the other. Weight gain is also very common because your body is starving itself due to malabsorption so it's telling you to not only eat more, but it's also storing fat to try to keep you alive. I hope that doesn't sound too jumbled.

Middle of July sounds like a long time to me! Can you find another doctor in your area that could see you sooner? You should eat gluten before you see the doc because otherwise your test will come out false-negative. The doctor will do a blood test and then probably an endoscopy. It doesn't hurt and you're asleep the whole time. A colonoscopy is actually not that bad either. The worst part is drinking the solution before <_< !

I have had the same symptoms as well. My rash on my chin and took a couple weeks to go away. It returned once since I Glutened myself on accident a couple times in a row. My daughter also has celiac and has terrible consipation. She cried when she tried to go. It's terrible and if it makes you feel better to stay away from it, so be it!

Wow... when was the last time you made an appt. w/ a GI doc? A 2-month wait is NOTHING!

I too gained weight after going gluten-free. It was my own fault tho, as I sort of OD'd on all the yummy foods I COULD have so I wouldn't be so upset at all the foods I could no longer have!! I lost 25 of the 35 I gained and will struggle for that last 10 for the rest of my life, I'll bet!

I truly understand your frustration. I have not clinically been diagnosed with Celiac but feel most of my symptoms are consistent with it. I too have constipation and have trouble losing weight. I also get "acid reflux symptoms", diagnosed with "IBS", sometimes get little bumps on the inside of my cheeks, had eczema forever, irritability, tingling in extremities. There was also a time when I was cooking a dumpling for my family that consisted of flour and began to have a sore throat because of the spores of gluten that were in the air. There are times that if I eat gluten, the next morning I will be so bloated that I cannot even touch my stomach. Many times eating out at restaurants causing nausea on the way home. Truly I believe I live in a carb lover's @#**. There was a time I did get blood work done for a diagnosis but at the time I was avoiding gluten so it came back negative. I have not done any further testing and I guess probably should. I wish you the best of luck and YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Just wanted to add that checking B12 and Vitamin D only is not going to give an accurate picture of vitamin deficiencies.   B12 Cobalamine needs the seven other B vitamins to work properly.   You can have vitamin deficiency symptoms before the B12 blood level changes to show deficiency.  You can have "normal" B12, but have deficiencies in other B vitamins like Thiamine and Niacin, for which there are no accurate tests. Take a B Complex supplement with all the B vitamins.  Take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which has been shown to promote intestinal healing.  Thiamine Mononitrate found in most vitamin supplements is not easy for the body to utilize.  What makes thiamine mononitrate not break down on the shelf also makes it hard for the body to absorb and utilize.  Thiamine and Niacin B 3 deficiency symptoms include anxiety, depression and irritability.  The brain uses more Thiamine than other organs.  Take the B Complex and Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and look for health improvements in the following weeks.

Hello, @rei.b, Ehlers Danlos syndrome and Celiac Disease can occur together in genetically predisposed individuals.  Losing ones gallbladder is common with celiac disease. I'm glad Naltrexone is helping with your pain.  Naltrexone is known to suppress tTg IgA and tTg IgG production, so it's not surprising that only your DGP IgG and DGP IgA are high.   Have you tried the Autoimmune Protocol diet designed by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, a Celiac herself?  The AIP diet helps lower inflammation and promotes intestinal healing.   The AIP diet is a Paleo diet that eliminates foods that can cause intestinal inflammation until you heal on the inside, then more foods can be added back in.  The low histamine AIP diet will help reduce inflammation further.   Histamine is released as part of the immune response in celiac disease.  Foods also contain various amounts of histamine or provoke histamine release.  Lowering the amount of histamine from foods helps.  The body, with help from B vitamins, can clear histamine, but if more histamine is consumed than can be cleared, you can stay in an inflammatory state for a long time. Cutting out high histamine foods is beneficial.  Omit night shades which contain alkaloids that add to leaky gut syndrome found with celiac disease.  Night shades include tomatoes, peppers including bell peppers, potatoes and eggplants.  Processed foods like sausages and gluten-free processed products are high in histamines.  All Grains are removed from the diet because they are inflammatory and provoke histamine release. Blood tests for deficiencies in B vitamins are notoriously inaccurate.  You can have vitamin deficiency symptoms before blood levels show a deficiency.  Blood levels do not accurately measure the quantity of B vitamins stored inside the cells where they are utilized.  The brain will order stored vitamins to be released from organs into the blood stream to keep the brain and heart supplied while deficiency occurs inside organs, like the gallbladder.  Gall bladder dysfunction is caused by a deficiency in Thiamine Vitamin B 1 and other B vitamins.   The eight essential B vitamins are water soluble and easily lost with diarrhea and constipation, and the malabsorption and inflammation that occurs with celiac disease.  Because they are water soluble, the body can easily excrete any excess B vitamins in urine.  The best way to see if you are deficient is to take a B Complex and Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and look for health improvements in the following weeks.  Most B Complex supplements contain Thiamine Mononitrate which is not bioavailable.  The body has a difficult time utilizing thiamine mononitrate because it doesn't break down easily.  Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.   Remember your intestines are in a damaged, permeable state.  Treat them tenderly, like you would a baby until they heal.  You wouldn't feed a baby spicy bell peppers and hard to digest corn and nuts.  Change your diet so your intestines can heal.   I use a combination of B12 Cobalamine, B 6 Pyridoxine, and B1 Benfotiamine for pain.  These three B vitamins have analgesic properties.  They relieve pain better than other otc pain relievers.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.
