Rum And Sugar Cane Allergy

Ok, so this isn't directly related to gluten, but I wasn't sure where else to ask (turned up empty on google and at my allergists).

After going gluten-free, I was still feeling sick so I got tested for other allergies and came up positive for a non-life threatening allergy to sugar cane.

Rum is made from sugar cane, so I've been avoiding it, but then I got to thinking...

Wiskey is made from barley, but is distilled so is therefore safe for us to drink.

Beer is not distilled, so it is not safe to drink.

Since rum is distilled shouldn't it be safe for me to put in my rum cake??

Yoho Ho and a bottle of rum :P

It is generally accepted that the protein molecules known as gluten are too large and heavy to pass through the distillation process and into the distillate. Certainly, detectable amounts are not present. Alcoholic beverages which are double or even triple distilled have undergone additional processing in which the distillate is again distilled, further purifying it.

An allergy to sugar cane is something new to me. Most allergies are to proteins, and proteins are complex chains of amino acids. I would expect that any plant protein from the cane is removed, and that the rum is safe for you to drink. But that is my educated inference, not something that I know to be a fact.

My personal preference is Bacardi Gold :P

I would have said exactly what psawyer said.

I have to disagree, Mount Gay is the best.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
