Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if there is any support groups near Des Moines, Iowa? I am newly diagnosed after being misdiagnosed with IBS for 25 years.

Hey Calle,

Welcome to the group. I am way up in Decorah, but I do remember someone telling me about a support group around Ames. It was just so far away that I file 13'd it. lol. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you ever find your way up this direction give me a shout.

The following thread has a list of support groups in IA that I ran across while searching for my sister. I live out of state. I contacted the one for Waverly this year and they were very helpful in getting me in touch with a Cedar Rapids support group, which is not on that list.

Thanks for the info. I'm doing okay with the diet from doing my own research and reading a number of books. I just thought it would be nice to be able to meet with others for support and different ideas or tips on eating this way. I have noticed that eating gluten free the items are not enriched with vitamins like your other grain products, which concerns me because I already have a malabsorption problem with vitamins/minerals. I guess I will just have to supplement, but I have to be careful in what I take because my stomach is so sensitive when it comes to vitamins and minerals.

You might want to try a powdered supplement. I take one by Rainbow Light called Healthy family Multi-Vitamin. It's easy on my stomach. It's a little expensive but I'm planning to switch back to tablets, if they are cheaper, now that my system has healed more.

I am in Aurelia, Iowa and have been looking for other Iowans to gather and support one another. I live approximately 1.25 hrs east of Sioux City, IA. Hy-Vee has been very helpful and is special ordering different things and is much cheeper than specialty stores.

Hi alicia and welcome. I hope you'll find this community to be as supportive as I have. :)

Have you found a doc., especially a GI doc near Sioux City that is knowledgeable about celiac disease?

Thank you for the reply. I currently live out of state but I have a family member who lives in the area.

Hello everyone. I live in Sioux City and just went to a GI doctor yesterday. He is located in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota which is about 1-2 miles from sioux city. So if you are looking for a doctor you can (pm) me and I can give you his name. I go to get my biopsy done on Monday.. Yikes.... My son was diagnosed with celiac about 2 months ago. My other two children go up to Sioux Falls in December , so i guess we will see. Hope to get to know all of you :)

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
